Dick Welles* Selections At Lexington MEDDLING MATTIE— HlOX PINE— WAPONOCA. We are picking MEDDLING MATTIE to cop honors in the opening number over the Futurity Course distance. She was a starter last Wednesday, but she did not seem to relish the going, and that, coupled with the poor ride she received, found her among the also rans. We are throwing that race out of the calculations, as it was not one of her true races. She turned in a fast half since that race and ought to go well here. TOON PINE is the danger in the race. He is always giving his best, and if in trim, will make things lively for the winner. WAPONOCA fared poorly in his first appearance of the year, but is able to do much better. He should be the one to save the show meney. EMBRYO— MAYOR BEHKM A N— KICK I.E. Of the maidens that will hook up in the second tilt, we like EMBRYO over MAYOR | BKHRMAN, On pa,st performances these j two seem to be much the best. EMBRYO j had a couple of racing lessons at Jefferson Park, where he finished second once, and unplaced another time. On the strength of the tatters - last race and a recent speed test, we favor his chances highly here. MAYOR BEHRMAN ran a fair race to finish third in his last start. If he were to show any improvement over that effort, think he would have no trouble in saving the place money. FICKLE is a first timer and how she will go in a race remains to be seen. Her morning workouts have been more than satisfactory to her owner, and a race back to her trials would find her closa up at the finish. LITTLE COOK— BATTLE OX-KEKJA. LITTLE COOK will very likely be an outsider in the wagering in this race, but we think his chances are good for a win. He met with a slight accident last year and was thrown out of training early. Reports have it that he is all to the good again and ready for the races. Judging from BATTLE ONS last race, he will be the one to beat. His last appearance was a decided improvement over a preceding start, and if it is a true indication of his form, will prove a hard one to beat K EEC AX could take care of the show, were he to race to his last years form. THE SPA— SA A R— CHARCOAL. Last Saturday found THE SIA entered in the third race, and he was thought to have the race at his mercy. However, he failed miserably. He showed a flash of early speed but was through after reaching the three-quarter pole. Assuming that it wasnt his day, we are going to place him right on top here. If he would run as lie is able to, dont see why he should lose. SAAR was in the same race and landed in third place. All he has to do to land the place money here is to give up the same effort today. CHARCOAL fared poorly in his first appearance at this track, but can do much better. We like him for the show. STARBECK— MARY O.-ED BIRKE. The Winchester Purse, to be run as the fifth, will see the crack STARBECK in action the first time this year. He started out in his three-year-old career to be one of the top notchers but went wrong and then was taken up again. Tt is said that he benefited greatly by his winter rest and is now-ready to go with the best of them. He will be Kiven some stiff company to race against today, but he should be the one to score. MARY O.. one of the fillies nominated for the Derby, is held in high esteem by her t miner and she ouebt to be the one to race to the place. ED R PRICE is far from Derby class, but may do better than his last race indicated. DARK PHANTOM— LADY STONE-BENEFICENT. DARK PHANTOM, which races for J. N. Camden, looms up as the most likely winner on the card. She is scheduled to compete with nine other three-year-old fillies over the Futurity Course disance. Her last start found her vanquishing Menifee in a fast run race. While it is true she picks up quite a few pounds today, the company she meets is not quite up to that she met in her last out. and all in all. looks much the best of those entered. LADY STONE figures to be closest to the PHANTOM at the finish. If BENEFICENT is in the same advanced form as are her stablerr.atos from the Idle Hour Farm Stable, she would be the one to race third. HALE— THE LEOPARD— OLD TOM. While HALU was decisively beaten in his start last Friday, there is just a possibility that had his rider made his move sooner he would have been much closer up at the finish. As it was, he came around the others like a flash after reaching the stretch, and just missed getting the place. Assuming that his rider learned a lesson from that race, we are expecting him to romp home the winner today. THE LEOPARD showed a little better in his last race when he finished second to Peggy Bledsoe. If he would run as kindly today he should land the place money again. OLD TOM would prove a real menace in the race if he were to repeat his last effort, when he splashed his way through the mud to g jt home the winner over Brown Leaf.
