CANTORS FINAL TRIAL Showing Impressive Though Beaten in Rennert Handicap Marche Militaire With Big Con ¬ cession in Weight Leads Him Home BALTIMORE Md May 8 Canter got his final trial for the rich Preakness Stakes this afternoon He was one of the eight starters in the 5000 Rennert Handicap a dash of threequarters for threeyearolds and although beaten oft some three and a half lengths his showing was an impressive one Shouldering topweight of 126 pounds and after beginning slowly Canter raced in the middle of the track all the way and at no time during the running was he punished by Turner He was giving nineteen pounds to Marche Militaire which has been showing keen speed in the races this spring The latter left the barrier with a rush and in the run down the back stretch drew away into a two lengths lead He ran the quarter in 22 s Keeping up this fast pace he went the half in 46 and still had a lead of a couple of lengths and running apparently in hand Straightened out for the final run Chalmers shook Marche Militaire up a bit and lie increased his advantage to four lengths At the finish he was taken up and had a bit in reserve The threequarters were run in 1 12 12GOES GOES MILE ITS 139 139Turner Turner went on with Canter and sent him another quarter The colt finished out the mile in 139 not at all bad considering the weight he had up It was an impressive trial and Canter will undoubtedly be favorite in Mondays features His defeat this after ¬ noon was a keen disappointment to the public who backed him to a man and sent him to the post a 7 to 10 favorite favoriteAn An immense gathering turned out the crowd being the largest of the meeting meetingTwo Two other Preakness candidates were pa ¬ raded in public when Display and Banton went to the post in the Govans Handicap This pair staged a great stretch duel in which Display was victor by a nose In the early running Gold Stick went to the front and made the pace Turner kept Banton right up with him while Maiben laid off the pace with Display Entering the home stretch Display was taken to the outside of the leaders and moving up stoutly joined the pair racing in front It was a desperate duel from there to the end The mile and a sixteenth was run in 1 45 first mile in 1 39 which was as fast as Canters workout workoutBlue Blue and Tied lost a tough race wherv Perkiomen beat him half a length in the Unseed Steeplechase Blue and Red was ridden by Xeander and after rating off the pace the first turn of the field went to the front and assumed an easy lead at the tenth jump He then drew away and looked a certain winner until going to the last fence when he began to falter and Perkiomen clos ¬ ing with a good burst of speed got up and won going away When he pulled up Clue and Red was a badly lamed horse This of course was responsible for his defeat Mi nata was third beaten off eight lengths Lois Rinehart furnished an upset when she won tSie second race for which Amy A was favorite Lois Rinehart outrun for the first eighth went to the outside of the lead ¬ ers on the far turn and assuming an easy lead held it for the remainder of the trip Chalmers became a bit anxious in the stretch and at the finish was driving Lois Rinehart hard to beat Amy A by a length and a half The latter began well but was unable to keep pace with the winner She raced close to the rail and saved ground on all the turns and Mundcn rode her hard for the entire trip Victrix after beginning slowly closed an immense gap and finished with a rush on the outside Lena Rinehart ran an indif ¬ ferent race and finished fourth
