MIRADOR A SURPRISE Furnishes the Unexpected in Win ¬ ning Kings County Handicap Bumper Crowd Journeys to toJamaica Jamaica to See Excellent ExcellentSaturdays Saturdays Program NEW YORK N Y May S The twentieth running of the Kings County Handicap one of the feature races of the spring meeting of the Metropolitan Jockey Club at Jamaica resulted in a big surprise today when William Ziegler Jrs fouryearold colt Mirador conquered a good band Harry Payne Whit ¬ neys Blondin a Kentucky Derby eligible finished second in the mile and sixteenth test of speed and endurance The Green tree Stables Cherry Tree was third Others iii the field included R T Wilsons Wilder ¬ ness James Butlers Turf Idol and the Log Cabin Studs entry Blind Play and High Star With 5000 added the stake was worth 6700 to the winner Mirador with the feather of H7 pounds in the saddle was the light weight of the contestants Wilderness carried the heaviest impost 115 pounds poundsThe The unexpected result began developing at the head of the stretch when Blondin went wide and Herbert piloted Mirador along the rail and through the gap Up to that time it appeared as though Blondin would be the winner despite the fact that Harvey brought him from the rear to the front in one eighth of racing on the back stretch This mighty rush which no doubt took much out of the cot combined with his wide turn into the stretch brought about his defeat defeatThe The half holiday card of sport attracted a Itumper crowd to the track The attendance since the meeting opened has been consider ¬ ably above the average of previous years and Saturdays gathering was up to the largest The racing was conducted under ideal conditions An early threat of rain passed before post time for the first race and a warm sun beat down upon the specta ¬ tors The track was at its best bestQUICK QUICK START STARTWhen When the field for the big race of the day lined up in front of Mars Cassidy he did not keep them long in position Mirador was on the rail with Turf Idol on the other end of the line There was a bit of wheeling but when the barrier went up all seven starters were away in good order orderIn In the rush to the first turn Blind Play which was in motion slightly before the others took the lead Lapped on him on the outside were his stablemate Turf Idol and Cherry Pie all heads apart Wilderness tinder restraint was last while Blondin with W Harvey was next to last lastWhen When the field straightened out for tha run up the back stretch Bhnd Play was show ¬ ing the way by a full length There was a general closing up among the forerunners Turf Idol displaced High Star in leading the pursuit of the peacemaker Then it was that Blondin made his run runFrom From next to last place ten lengths behind the leader Harvey brought Blondin up on the outside The colt literally ran over his opponents He caught and passed those in front of him so quickly that many feared he would be unable to carry his speed through to the end endBlondin Blondin was one length in front coming nround the far turn When he reached the head of the stretch he went wide and Mirador which had gradually improved his position in the run around the turn suddenly loomed into the contention in a formidable manner Mirador slowly overhauled Blondin and in the run through the stretch he drew away to win by a length and a half ridden out Blondin saved second place by a length Cherry Pie was separated from Wilderness which closed strong through Uie last quarter by three lengths lengthsUXFUHLEIJ UXFUHLEIJ GRADUATES GRADUATESSix Six platers threeyearolds and upward filed to the post in the opener at three quarters Five of them were still maidens when it was over Gifford A Cochrans Unfurled a filly by Pennant Early Morn ingt graduated somewhat to the surprise of the handicappers With the apprentice R Haviland riding she won easily finishing four lengths in advance of the Butlerowned Bombardier Tempesto carrying the colors of Mrs H M McPhcarsoii was third Far in the ruck beaten away off was G D Wideners Marcellus which the majority had considered the likely winner winnerUnfurled Unfurled won from end to end Beginning from the inside position at the post she beat her rivals away from the barrier and the race thereupon resolved itself into a chase tContinued on fourteenth page MIRADOR A SURPRISE Continued from first page Unfurled held her advantage without threat from the others at any time She increased her lead to two lengths in the run down the back stretch and when the turn was reached she stretched it to four lengths lengthsThe The lowly Somerset led the pursuit with Bombardier in close attendance for the first half mile Marcellus meanwhile began to drop back He had none of the speed he displayed in his previous race when he lost the purse to Alkali Ike by a neck He is touched in the wind and this probably mili ¬ tated against him himComing Coming into the stretch Somerset began to weaken and L Fator on Bombardier took up the futile chase after the pacemaker Bombardier drew away from the others and earned second place by five lengths The only real competition in the race was a drive for third money Somerset hard ridden byj C H Miller appeared to be able to stick it out but inside the last sixteenth post H Thurber on Tempesto found an extra ounce of speed in his mount and in virtually the last stride he was up to head Somerset SomersetMaster Master William the Escoba Bally Con nell colt owned by A J Gadek outran seven other twoyearold platers entered for 5000 each over the fiveeighths distance of the second number Pop Bell a winter cam ¬ paigner at Jefferson Park was second while Green Back another seasoned racer was third thirdAs As in the previous contest the winner led all the way and scored his victory easily The start was delayed three minutes by Pop Bell which twice went through the barrier the first time going to the sixteenth post before R Carter could wheel him around When the real start came Pop Bell was not so alert and he was beaten away by Master William and Green Back The latter met with a bit of misfortune immediately Master William bumped him slightly and he dropped back backMaster Master William quickly opened a one length gap when under way while Pop Bell moved up beside Noon and Miss Rock Mas ¬ ter William increased his lead the farther he went and at the end was three lengths clear Pop Bell was second by the same distance while Green Back brought up third two lengths in front of Wee Burn BurnGreen Green Back after his early mishap did not find his racing stride until after the first quarter Then he came on steadily and gamely gamelyFor For a secondary feature the association programmed the California Handicap at threequarters for the older division of horses It was carded as the third race and it signalized the return of Chilhowee to com ¬ petition It was the first start of the worlds record holder Chilhowee since a year ago last March when he ran unplaced behind Atherstone in the Coffroth Handicap at Ti ¬ juana juanaIt It was not a glorious comeback for Chil ¬ howee Although he had worked in excel ¬ lent form at Belmont Park he ran a dull race under his top weight of 124 pounds and finished last in the field The winner was the Oak Ridge Stables Mino piloted by Earl Sande in typical Sande fashion The Cochran green and gold was second on Lit ¬ tle Asbestos Flag of Truce was third In addition to Chilhowee the also ran division embraced the Log Cabin Studs Lucky Play and James Butlers Pique PiqueSandes Sandes jockeyship was perhaps the chief contributing factor to Mines victory He rode in his best form and his mount did full justice to his guidance From a fast and good start in which Pique was first away from the extreme outside position Sande drove Mino into the van He collared Pique immediately and the pair like a team quickly sped away from the others In the first quarter they drew five lengths to the front racing head and head headLeading Leading the others was Little Asbestos and he was well clear of his rivals Chil ¬ howee ran head and head with Lucky Play in the ruck for threeeighths and then he began to drop back until he was absolutely last Mino and Pique continued to measure stride for stride all the way around the turn and to the last eighth post postRounding Rounding the bend Pique which was piloted by Breuning got his head in front He was on the outside of Mino all the way Straight ¬ ening out for the run to the finishMino under Sandes hand ride got his head in front again With only a sixteenth to go Pique gave it up He quit as though his infirm leg had gone bad again Mino thereupon drew away to win by a length and a half halfWhen When Pique was through Little Asbestos moved into second place in the running He barely saved that portion of the purse In the last eighth Flag of Truce came from the rear with a great rush and missed by only a neck of beating Little Asbestos AsbestosThe The fifth a one mile and seventy yards gallop for thoroughbred fouryearolds and upward which have not won a race since the Metropolitan season opened was marred by the start Cassidy released the webbing while Futuro was sideways and the others left in ragged order There was only five starters and the order in which they finished was Curland Doughnut Calife Spugs and Futuro Curland was first away by P Fisher was content to let Doughnut make the early pace The pair drew away from the othci racing around the clubhouse turn with Doughnut leading Curland by a length and a half halfOn On the back stretch Curland closed in on Doughnut They raced head and head for the threeeighths which was all that Dough ¬ nut could stand Curland opened a three lengths gap and came on to win cleverly Doughnut held the others safe and took sec ¬ ond place by two lengths Calife raced all the way in the position in which he finished finishedThe The sport concluded with a condition race at threequarters for threeyearolds and over Seven accepted and the finish found Ragweed Needle Gun and Araby in the order named the last named pair being an entry from the William Ziegler Jr stable They were conceded the victory before the race but these calculations proved all wrong Ragweed was a comparatively easy winner She led all the way and beat Needle Gun to the finish by one length in hand Needle Gun chased the filly almost all the way but could never get up Araby closed with a rush in the stretch to earn third money
