HISTORY OF THE PREAKNESS STAKES Interesting Story of Pimlicos Great Race and List of Winners WinnersFrom From Its Inception in 1873 to 1925 Inclusive The Maryland Jockey Clubs great fixture the Preakness which closed April 6 with a gratifying entry list of the foremost threeyearolds in the country is the renewal of the original stake which from 1S73 to 1889 was one of the leading features of Pimlico Spring fixtures and was revived in 1909 on a much more pretentious scale scaleThe The Preakness was as is generally known named after M H Sanfords good colt by Lexington Bay Leaf that in William Haywards capable hands won the famous Dinner Party or as it was afterwards called the Dixie at the inaugural Pimlico meeting in October 1870 defeating Thomas W Doswells Virginiabred Ecliptic and T G Moores Foster the latter a great fourmiler fourmilerPreakness Preakness was a village in New Jersey where the Sanford Stock Farm was located and the fact that the colt was thought good enough to be called after the home place gives an idea of the estimation in which he was held heldBy By winning the much talked of Dinner Party Stakes Preakness and Pimlico were so firmly associated in the minds of the racing public that a meeting over the old track without some memorial to his prowess was in the opinion of Gov Oden Bowie the then president of the Maryland Jockey Club and his associates simply unthinkable so the Preakness was assigned a prominent place on the clubs program programThe The Preakness of those days however was a modest affair with 1000 added the average value to the winner being about 1600 and the distance one mile and a half halfAfter After 1899 the Maryland Jockey Club discontinued racing at Pimlico for a decade or more and it was not until 1909 that the Preakness was revived with 5000 added the distance from 1909 to 1910 a mile from 1911 to 1921 a mile and an eighth and from 1924 to the present time one mile and threesixteenths threesixteenthsThe The sum added has been increased to 15000 in 1918 and 50000 the present figure which with starting fees of 1000 each to the winner makes the Preakness one of the most valuable and sought after stakes in this country countryIn In recent years the famous Woodlawn Vase has been added as a trophy annually through the courtesy of the successive winning owners of the Preakness and carries with it a prestige that is highly regarded by the true sportsman especially if he happens also to have bred the successful threeyearold threeyearoldThe The first winner in 1873 was John F Chamberlins bay gelding Survivor by Vandal dam by Lexington bred in Kentucky by John M Clay at the famous Ashland Stud StudSurvivor Survivor was trained by A D Pryor a prominent horseman of the day and was ridden by that accomplished jockey George Barbee who was at Pimlico not many years ago and is believed to be still connected with the sport In this year there were twentyone subscribers with seven starters and the time for the mile and a half was 2 43 43In In 1888 the late R Wyndham Walden of Bowling Brook won the stake with Refund by Sensation dam Letty ridden by Fred Littlefield Another Maryland owner E A Clabaugh winning in 1877 with Cloverbrook a chestnut colt by the Lexington sire Vauxhall VauxhallIn In between there came a goodly list of thoroughbreds George L Lorillard annexing the stake no less than five successive times from 1878 to 1882 with Duke of Magenta Harold Grenada Saunterer and Vanguard a wonderful record for even that successful owner and his capable trainer R W Walden WaldenThe The Dixie in the autumn at two miles was in the nature of a sequel to the Preakness in the spring the Double Event being won by J F Chamberlins Tom Ochiltree in 1875 G L Lorillards Duke of Magenta and Grenada in 1878 and 1880 and A J Cassatts The Bard in 1886 thus proving them to be the best of their respective years yearsComplete Complete list of winners from 1873 to 1889 and from 1909 to 1925 is
