RHINOCKS 1926 DEBUT Makes Auspicious Start in Winning Derby Trial Purse Teak Scores by Narrow Margin Dark Phantom Beats Fast FastSprinters Sprinters LOUISVILLE Ivy May 10 The Park ¬ view Stables much heralded Rhinock made an auspicious threeyearold debut this afternoon when he won the designated Derby Trial Purse of 2000 over the mile distance Banco Suivi finished in second place and Malcolm B Jr landed third thirdRhinocks Rhinocks margin of victory was by a length driving hard to outlast the Bradley starter Banco Suivi displaying good speed moved into the lead and had his earliest followers American Son and Malcolm B Jr in distress before the stretch turn was reached Rhinock was always in a forward position but when going to the first turn Garner elected to take him out from an inner position to ride him around the leaders but he found Banco Suivi held on more gamely than he had anticipated and it was only by hard riding that he managed to send Rhinock level with the leader and in the last seventy yards he managed to draw out a trifle Mal ¬ colm B Jr managed to outstay American Son the pair being considerable distance off from the leaders The four other starters comprising the field never figured as con ¬ tenders tenders3TOT 3TOT SO IMPRESSIVE IMPRESSIVERhinock Rhinock was an overwhelming favorite His failure to win off did not impress the most of the close observers that he would be a considerable factor in the Kentucky Derby There is however in his favor the fact that it was his first start this year and that the race should improve him The track was overly firm and he covered the mile in 139 The other serious reflection on his performance is that it took his best to beat Banco Suivi The latter is not seri ¬ ously regarded by the Bradley connections connectionsIndianapolis Indianapolis which proved a disappoint ¬ ment on several occasions last year again gave an erratic performance in the second race for which she was the favorite She failed to get a part of the purse after hav ¬ ing raced prominently for three quarters with Prodigal the early leader The latter tired from his early effort and gave way to Sea Drift in the last sixteenth Prodigal beat Smacker by a small margin for second place The race brought the first claim of the meeting T J Pendergasfs Nettie Sweep being taken by E B Elkins at a cost of ofjiroo jiroo jirooComrade Comrade which races for the Shoestring Stable Mrs J M Byrd furnished an up stt in the opening race when he led for the entire four and a half furlongs to win han ¬ dily from Ortlieb with the favorite Florida Gold following Some good colts starteti here but the winner under the hustling tac ¬ tics of Scobie was away prominently and held sway to the finish finishSIAKKLIXG SIAKKLIXG FINISH FINISHMose Mose Goldblatts Teak was the first favor ¬ ite of the afternoon to win and her victory was by the narrowest margin and came in the fourth at threequarters in which some highly regarded ones met She beat South Wind by inches and would have been beaten at a longer distance South Wind closed an immense gap after a slow beginning and finished with a rush Laveen which landed in third place also closed a big gap to over ¬ haul the tiring Christmas Morning and Florence Mills which had both contended strongly for the first half mile mileJockey Jockey IX Pubois who rode Sea Drift in the second race came right back with a victory on Dark Phantom in the third race A good band of sprinters met here at threequarters and Dark Phantom drew out in the last sixteenth to win well in hand She was favored by her light weight and it was responsible for an improved showing over her last start at Lexington Sandy Man from a slow beginning closed a big gap and wore down Prince of Wales The latter at one time looked as if he would register a runaway victory but after taking a five lengths lead began tiring bady but succeeded in landing in third place placeThirteen Thirteen Sixty was returned the winner of the sixth race She registered in handy style from Mary Helen with Gay Hallie following the pair in third place The vot ¬ eran Fantoche was victor in the closing race 3t enabled S Stecle to win his first race since his injury at Miami Fantoche won with oase coming away in the stretch after having trained far out of it Xtra coming steadily in the last eighthA landed in second jlace from Oseda The latter as well is Ijsuly Von were given bad rides and under Jjetter riding would havo figured more strongly if the result
