Here and There on the Turf A Notable Week Derby Prospects Withers and Belmont Steeplechase Outlook This is one of the most notable weeks in the whole turf year With the Preakness Stakes of the Maryland Jockey Club already decided at the old Pimlico course there remains the 50000 Kentucky Derby to be decided at Churchill Downs on Saturday That is reason enough for its being a week of tremendous importance importanceAnd And the magnificent renewal of the Freak ness Stakes only adds to the interest in the Kentucky Derby even though it will be a different field that is sent to the post for the Kentucky Jockey Clubs feature of Saturday SaturdaySome Some of those taking part in the Freakness Monday are already on their way to the Louis ¬ ville track but there are so many others that were reserved for the Kentucky Derby that the race has an entirely new interest Until but a few days ago there seemed to bs an excellent chance for W R Coes Pom pey being one of the Preakness Stakes field There were so many contradictory announce ¬ ments made of plans for the son of Sun Briar and Cleopatra that right up to the last no one felt entirely sure that he would not be raced But Pompey was kept just about as busy as need be without racing and Karrick seems to have sent an exceedingly fit horse lo Churchill Downs But just as the Preak ncss Stakes with the exception of Bagenbag gage was made up of eastern horses the Kentucky Derby will have a great percentage of Kentucky horses trying for that great race Pompey and Canter will naturally give the East a strong hand next Saturday and there are some few others that may be on hand but they will bo outnumbered by Kentuckians at post time and the Kentuckians are supremelj confident that the big money of the race will remain in Kentucky KentuckyEdward Edward R Bradleys colts are naturally looked upon as the mainstays of Kentucky and it is hard to make any one in Kentucky be ¬ lieve that any candidate can take the measure of Bubbling Over That is what makes the Kentucky Derby such a tremendously big thing for racing for most of the New Yorkers are as loyal to Pompey while the Marylanders pin their faith to J E Griffiths Canter That is as it should be and sectional pride in horses makes for all that is best in racing Then after the Kentucky Derby has passed into history there will still remain the Withers Stakes and the Belmont Stakes of the West cheater Racing Association to be decided at Belmont Park The Fairmount Derby to be run at the CoUinsville course the Latonia Derby and many other rich races for the threeyearolds Thus it will be seen that with the constantly increasing opportunities for threeyearolds it does not do to hail the win ¬ ner of either the Preakness Stakes or the Ken ¬ tucky Derby as champion of the division The Withers Stakes is to be run May 26 and the colors of no Kentuckian will be shown in that great race Then the Belmont Stakes this year a dash of a mile and a half under scale weights has few indeed of the Kentuckians still in the eligible list listBubbling Bubbling Over which has raced so bril ¬ liantly this year and the colt that has such a wonderful chance of being returned the win ¬ ner of the Kentucky Derby is not an eligible He was nominated by Mr Bradley but so lit ¬ tle was thought of him as a yearling that he was declared when the first declarations be ¬ came due in the fall of 1924 when he was a yearling With the other declarations made by Mr Bradley Barcolo is the only one still eligible to bear the white silks with green trimmings trimmingsThe The Belmont Stakes is to be run June 12 and by that time there will be many a good one ready for the mile and a half that could not be made ready for the great races of thia week One of these is Haste the colt that has a victory over Pompey to his credit He is probably the most fashionable of the three yearolds that is yet to be paraded under colors colorsHam Ham Kecne has taken his time with the son of Maintenant and it is safe to assume thai when he is brought to the races possibly in the Withers he will be fit and ready When the racing moves over to Belmont Park on Friday May 21 it will bring the first steeplechasing over The Jockey Club circuit An excellent idea of what to expect was ob ¬ tained in ihe two days of racing conducted by the United Hunts Racing Association at the Terminal course before the meeting at Jamaica opened The racing at the Terminal track suggested that there will be no lack of cross ¬ country horses of good class for the racing at Belmont Park even though there will be strong Canadian conflict at Woodbine Park in To ¬ ronto from May 22 until May 29 29The The Ontario Jockey Club is particularly lib ¬ eral with offerings for the crosscountry horses During that week the Canadian races are bountiful and a race through the field is pro ¬ vided each day At Belmont Park for its first offering there will be the International Steeplechase with 2500 added and then on May 29 the closing date at Woodbine Park there will be run at Belmont Park the 10 000 Charles L Appleton Memorial Steeple ¬ chase They are the only stake races in the curly days of the meeting and while the Ap ¬ pleton Memorial Steeplechase will undoubtedly bring out a representative field it is admitted that Woodbine Park offers a greater number of liberal stake races in the same length of time that its dates conflict with the big Nas ¬ sau County course Just so long as there is such stiff competition from Canada it is nat ¬ ural that turfmen should send their horses to Canada and it would seem that the only pos ¬ sible way to bring the steeplechasing back to the United States courses as has been devoutly hoped would be to have more liberal and a greater number of races through the field fieldFollowing Following twenty days of racing at Belmont Park there comes a like meeting of twenty days at Aqueduct where the jumpers hare another opportunity and then they will find the next crosscountry racing in August at Saratoga The length of these meetings is ample to afford every opportunity for cross ¬ country racing to prosper but there must be better team work The associations that have steeplechase courses must be more liberal in their offerings and the owners themselves must show a better appreciation of what is offered by being more liberal in entering and racing their horses It was a bit disappointing that Chilhowee did not show to better advantage in the Cali ¬ fornia Handicap at Jamaica Saturday It is true he had been away from the races a long time and he was set something of a task for his first time out but he had been showing so well in several of his training gallops that it was generally expected that he would cut more of a figure in the race Of course it is of interest to know that he has been brought back to the races at all and he will probably improve over this showing showingThis This is the same Chilhowee that played such an important part in the pacemaking of the third International Special in which Sarazen ran a mile and a quarter in 200 The same Chilhowee that in the same year hung out the record of 254 for a mile and three quarters to win the Latonia Championship Stakes and the same Chilhowee that holds the record of 148 for a mile and an eighth eighthTo To have Chilhowee back in racing form is an achievement and if he can return to any ¬ thing like the form he had as a threeyearold he will be a valuable additioa to the handi ¬ cap division
