PIQUE PROVIDES SURPRISE Unexpectedly Wins Rainbow Han ¬ dicap Feature at Jamaica Leads Home Tcspaslan and the llancocas llancocasPair Pair Silver Fox and Superlelte Ualsley Purse to Ceildon JAMAICA N T May 10 The Rainbow Handicap at threequarters with 2500 added provided an upset at Jamaica when James Butlers Pique ridden by E Barnes ac ¬ counted for the major portion of the purse His victory came after a drive with Vespesian from the Sanford Stock Farm while Silver Fox the main dependence of the Rancocas Stable was third Superlette stable com ¬ panion to Silver Fox completed the field fieldThe The horses left the barrier in good align ¬ ment and Pique at once raced into the lead Superlette raced after him while Sande al ¬ lowed Silver Fox to settle into his stride and brought up in the rear These positions were maintained until the stretch turn was reached with Pique next to the rail and rac ¬ ing along smoothly Superlette was still in second place while Sande was driving Silver Fox along smartly on the outside in an ef ¬ fort to get close to the leaders leadersSuperlette Superlette began to feel the effects of forcing the pace and gave way to Vespasian when the latter responded to punishment in the stretch Barnes in the meantime was riding Pique hard and the Butler racer bare ¬ ly got the verdict Vespasian had a narrow margin over Silver Fox at the end The lat ¬ ter finished strongest of all and would have been the winner in a few more strides stridesA A return of cool weather resulted in a falling off in the attendance but the crowd was well up to the Jamaica average The track was fast fastJockey Jockey Earl Sande astride the Rarcocas Stables Celidon accounted for the Baisley Purse at threequarters in a mild drive from the Log Cabin Stables Judicial while Louis Starrs Metzies Buddy was third leading Lachen a stablemate of the winner and James Butlers pair Wishing Stone and Hang On home The race attracted little attention from the crowd as the Rancocas pair were installed overwhelming favorites Hang On furnished some excitement before the start when he got the best of jockey Scuttinger and ran away a quarter of a mile before he was pulled up A false start added to the excitement and when the start came it was none too good Judicial was the first to show in front while Celiden went after him while Lachen was off slowly The latter quickly raced into contention and was soon within striking distance of the leader Judicial con ¬ tinued to show the way until the stretch way was reached where he went wide Met zies Buddy was racing prominently while Lachen was ridden to the outside of the leaders Through the final eighth Sande kept Celidon well under pressure and at the end held Judicial safe The Butler pair showed no speed at any stage and were far back backF F Bambaras Reprisal and jockey A Col ¬ lins proved best in the running of the first race of the day which engaged an even dozen of platers at threequarters C A Stonehams Night March was the one to race to second place while G A Coclirans Rosina was third The field was an unruly one at the i ost but left in good alignment Reprisal displayed the most speed and drew into the lead while Night March raced after him Rosina from a good start met with early trouble but quickly recovered and worked her way up through the field Rounding the stretch turn Reprisal con ¬ tinued to show the way while Night March was under pressure Through the final eighth Reprisal increased his advantage and drew away to win winApprentice Apprentice riders who had never ridden two winners were given an Greentree Stable led home his rivals by many lengths from R Bl Newmans Fiituro while G D AVideners Sabina was third The latter was eliminated from serious contention when she stumbled at the start and almost went to her knees Ferrash was sent into a safe lead and once around the first turn was taken under re ¬ straint There was no changes in the running positions until the far turn was reached Sabina at that point displaced Flying Al which dropped back to last place Through the stretch Ferrash continued to show the way and at the end had speed in reserve while Futuro held the tiring Sabina safe for second place placeHal Hal Bookers Nora Hayes ridden by jockey E Barnes scored her second victory in as many starts when she proved best of a band of platers at a mile and seventy yards Mrs A Swenkes Romany raced into second place while Anaitis from the Mirasol Stable was third Nora Hayes was top weight Barnes was content to follow the leaders Rounding the far turn Romany moved up fast on the outside while Barnes moved at the same time Swinging for home Nora Hayes was carried wide by Romany and after a hard duel outstayed him at the end Anaitis came fast through the stretch and took third from Gala Night which quit badly after saving much ground at the stretch turn turnNight Night March was claimed out of the first race by F J Kearns for 3000 3000Charles Charles Caffarelli took a call on the serv ¬ ices of jockey F Hastings for the remainder of the year Hastings has shown good form in the saddle recently recentlyJockey Jockey P Fisher was suspended for four days by the stewards of the Jamaica meeting for rough riding in the first race yesterday
