LEE 0 COTNER WINS Displays Excellent Speed in First Appearance of Year Beats Breakfast Bell and Roy Roycrofter crofter in Pewee Valley Purse Purseat at Churchill Downs LOUISVILLE Ivy May 11 There was an absence of features at Churchill Downs this afternoon the Pewee Valley Purse at a mile and seventy yards serving as the out ¬ standing attraction There were five start ¬ ers in it including Lee O Cotner making his debut for this year and also Roycrofter a prospective Kentucky Derby starter starterThe The above pair absorbed betting attention Lee O Cotner being most in demand The runnerup to Carlaris in the Coffroth Han ¬ dicap however did not lack for supporters the difference in the weight assignments of the pair being held to be sufficient to bring them together The Roycrofter supporters were amiss in their judgment for Lee O Cotner won handily with Breakfast Bell also leading Roycrofter at the end endLee Lee O Cotner displayed fine speed and moved promptly into a good lead He was followed closely by Roycrofter for the first threequarters but thereafter he was pressed by Breakfast Bell G Johnson got her away with an advantage but he lost when he began having trouble with his reins On the back stretch she appeared to be sulking but she moved up unwillingly in the stretch and raced only in spots She forced Lee O Cotner out at that and held Roycrofter safe all during the last eighth Roycrofter was worked out an additional quarter after the race raceCOMIXG COMIXG FOR THE DARBY DARBYSteady Steady arrivals added to the big crowd already here and swelled the attendance to a great number The weather was a trifle cool and the track was a bit off as a result of the added rain fall last night nightThe The racing was spectacular and spirited furnishing splendid entertainment for the spectators spectatorsAda Ada Blackjack carried IT P Gardners colors to victory in the first race beating Taudlane by a narrow margin with Lady Inez following the pair Ada Blackjack was close in pursuit of Our Buddy during the oarily stages and passed him in the last eighth but near the end was pressed hard by the fastfinishing Taudlane Lady Inez also came from far back and was going well at the end J N Camdens Aquitania scored a lucky victory in the second race in which she beat home The Hovel and Candy May Much crowd inpr coming soon after the start caused Candy May to go down She was far in the rear of other when Pool began racing her wide but she came with tremendous speed ind closed a big gap to land in third place Had she had a clear course she probably would have won off offPAT PAT CALIIOUX IX FRONT FRONTPat Pat Calhoun ridden by the veteran Ke deris led home a mediocre band in the third race at a mile and a sixteenth for which Korscland was favorite Pat Calhoun raced iis if much the best and drew out in the stretch Andry and Queen Agnes staged a spirited duel for second place with the former just lasting Norseland appeared Kore on her way to the post and raced far back until approaching the stretch where she saved some ground but was in the slower going during the last sixteenth The fifteen which made up the field in the fourth were closely lapped most of the way Several horses suffered from an inabilitv to pet clear and race at their top speed Med ¬ dling Mattie with an outer position was favored as she had clear going and coming fast in the last eighth outstayed Brier Hill in tho final strides Brier Hill was a promi ¬ nent factor from the start and a sixteenth out appeared the winner but succumbed in the final strides H Toller Archibalds colors scored their Initial victory of the Kentucky season when Crystal Domino won over some good two yearolds that started in the sixth race He began well and racing clear of the others held on gamely and outstayed Royal Julian The latter came determinedly during the stretch and outstayed Realtor The latter began tiring in the last eighth and also swerved out near the end Two Sixty I he favorite gave way completely during the stretch run
