SUBURBAN FINISH CRUSADER FIRST FIRSTAMERICAN AMERICAN FLAG SECOND SECONDKING KING SOLOMONS SEAL THIRD BAGENBAGGAGE TRIUMPHS IN LATONIA DERBY CRUSADER CAPTURES SUBURBAN HANDICAP GRAND ACHIEVEMENT Wins Famous Old Race Easily and in Exceedingly Fast Time American Flag Adds to Glen Riddle RiddleStable Stable Laurels by Landing Landingin in Second Place NEW YORK N Y June 5 Crusader the magnificent threeyearold son of Man o War and Star Fancy galloped home an easy winner of the famous old Suburban Handicap under the silks of Samuel D Kiddle this afternoon His stable mate American Flag champion of the 1925 racing season raced mons Seal was at the heels of the Riddle colt to save third from Harry Payne Whit ¬ neys Macaw The mile and a quarter was run in 203 with the utmost ease by the winner and the prize was worth just 13150 13150Bleak Bleak gray skies and a biting wind madu the day exceedingly uncomfortable but the Suburban was u magnet that brought out a tremendous crowd Some rain had fallen during the night but the track was fast and the sport through the day was worthy of the big gathering gatheringOf Of the twelve that had been named over ¬ night for the Suburban the withdrawals were Sarazen the topweight and winner of the Metropolitan Handicap Sunspero and Cherry Pie This left nine to race and before post time most of the attraction was directed to Crusader by reason of his good race behind Haste in the Withers WithersSPOT SPOT CASH LEFT LEFTLittle Little time was lost at the barrier and as it arose Spot Cash wheeled and was virtually left at the post but the others left in excel ¬ lent alignment Macaw was the one to go to tlie front and Chilhowee went out after him while Crusadcr was in third place and gallop ¬ ing alongside Joy Smoke Harrovian was in a forward position and then came Sun Pal with American Flag and King Solomons Seal bringing up the rear rearMcAtee McAtee permitted Macaw to race right along in command and he was soon a length and a half clear The pace soon told on Chilhowee and as he dropped back beaten it was Crusader that moved into second place Callahan had him under a nice steadying restraint and it was already evident he could go to Macaw at the first asking Joy Smoke was holding his position resolutely and Sun Pal had moved up slightly American Flag was making up ground on the outside while Fator was moving on King Solomons Seal on the inside but was running irto no end of difficulty difficultyIt It was not until rounding into the stretch that Callahan went after Macaw and as he permitted Crusader to run he dashed by the Whitney colt to open up a lead That really was the end of the Suburban as far as the winner was concerned Crusader just romped away and when he was five lengths clear Callahan again took hold of his mount and ho was being pulled up at the finish five lengths before his rivals rivalsSHOWS SHOWS MUCH IMPKOVEMENT IMPKOVEMENTTn Tn the meantime American Flag racing in better form than at any previous time this year had worked his way up on the outsidu and he was safely in second place King Solomons Seal had a deal of ground to make up and Fator did not ride with his ac ¬ customed skill but the old son of King James was there in time to beat the tired Macaw a length and a half for third thirdThis This Suburban makes it appear that Cru ¬ sader has the Bclmont at his mercy His race was one ot the most impressive per ¬ formances seen in many a day and he fin ¬ ished out the mile and a quarter with such ease that he could surely have galloped alotifr for a mile and a half in front of his company had it been required requiredThe The Corinthian Steeplechase Handicap over the short course and worth 3250 to the win ¬ ner brought a great finish when Fredden Hock from the Brookmeade Stable just lasted to beat Joseph 12 Widcners Barleycorn Continued on twenty fourth cag GRAND ACHIEVEMENT Continued from first page while Uhol from the Somerset Stable was a distant third It was a remarkably fast run race and the performance of Fredden Rock was a notable one when he carried the burden of all the pace and then stood the final drive gamely Through the early racing Damask showed altogether new speed and was the one to go out with Fredden Rock and he car ¬ ried the winner along at a pace that took considerable out of him But Mergler would not take back and finally Damask was put away awayAll All this time Specs Crawford was rating Barleycorn back of the pace and the Widener jumper was racing strongly Leaving the back stretch for the run home Barleycorn had closed up considerably on Fredden Rock but the son of Sea Horse II held to his lead and swinging into the front field he was still showing the way By this time Crawford had gone to a drive on Barleycorn and at the last fence the horses were lapped There Barleycorn jumped in slightly and he lost some ground before he could be straightened Fredden Rock made a better landing but it was a desperate fight right to the last stride where Fredden Rock was winner by half a length lengthFrom From a programmed list of nineteen plat ¬ ers in the opening race ihe field was cut to seven before post time A C Bostwicks Peddler proved best when he led Mrs M L Davis Washington home and Rigel closed with a rush to be third thirdIt It was a good start but Washington on the inside was kept down in there most of the way This was a decided handicap but swinging into the stretch he loomed up when he had racing room but at the same time Peddler circled around on the outside and under a hustling ride he had Washington beaten an eighth from the finish Rigel also came with a determined rush but just a bit late to be better than third thirdThe The mile for fillies and mares was a great contest when the Rancocas Stables fouryearold Nedana beat home Walter M Jeffords Edith Cavell probably one of the most prominent eligible fillies for the Coach ¬ ing Club American Oaks OaksBlack Black Maria dodged the issued in this and Silver Song and Flechita were also scratched leaving only Ethereal and Rag ¬ weed to oppose Nedana and Edith Cavell But they cut no figure and it was a two horse race all the way Nedana set a siz ¬ zling pace and Edith Cavell hung right at her sido when she raced the first threequar ¬ ters in 111 At the end Edith Cavell was coming again to be beaten three parts of a length in 1 37Vc
