RECORD AT THORNCLIFFE Saturdays Attendance Largest Ever Seen at Leaside Course program in Keeping With llic Occasion Goldbcater Takes the II J 31ac kcnzic Memorial TORONTO OnL June 5 Thorncliffe had record day this afternoon The largest gathering that ever turned out at the Leaside course was present It was a crowd that would have done credit to Woodbine Every available space in the enclosure was packed the big spacious lawns being crowded with the overflow from the grandstand The fences on the outside along the back stretch were lined with onlookers and the clubhouse enclosure was uncomfortably filled filledJt Jt was a glorious afternoon for the sport and secretary McLennan had done his part in furnishing a program in keeping with the occasion Besides the R J Mackenzie Mem ¬ orial Handicap 2500 added at a mile and an eighth additional features were the Lea side Purse a dash of a mile and the Picca ¬ dilly Purse for twoyearolds twoyearoldsMuch Much interest of course centered in the running of the Mackenzie Memorial Aucilla Token and Pixola were withdrawn leaving seven to go The winner was Goldbeater ownd by Donat Raymond of Montreal In todays running Goldbeater showed his true form Hidden by Abel he began in front and was never headed Setting a fast pace from the start and running the first mile in 139 V6 Goldbeater held his opponents safe all the way At the end he won by three parts of a length from Golden Billows BillowsAVAll AVAll 3IAX PACEMAKER PACEMAKERIn In the early running War Man forced the pace and when he retired Golden Billows and South Wind moved up with a rush and for a few strides at the turn out of the back stretch they passed Goldbeater Abel shook him up a bit and he went to the front again and for the remainder of the way the result was never in doubt Golden Billows and South Wind had a hot battle for second honors all through the final eighth and Golden Billows just lasted long enough to beat South Wind by a head for second place The Canadian bred Beau of the West was fourth six lengths away The winner equalled the track record when he ran the mile and an eighth In 1 f f27s 27s 27sToken Token was a good winner in the Leaside Purse Outrun in the early stages Petemel did not hurry him any Rounding the far turn he gradually improved his position and in the stretch run closed with a rush and at the end was going away when he beat Aucilla Ity three parts of a Jength Lady Essington was third four lengths back and then fol ¬ lowed McTinkle In the early running Aucilla went to the front arid with Alletachc in close pursuit they showed the way to the top of the stretch Here Alletachc tired but Aucilla hung on In the last eighth the latter at the end endOIKXKU OIKXKU TO IJELPKE Belpre was winner of the opener He was ridden by Burncy followed the leaders until Ktraigh toned out in the stretch where he closed gamely under a drive and wearing Sea Fairy down got up in the last fifty yards to win going away by a length Sea Fairy ran a good race Rounding the turn into the home stretch she went to the leaders with a rush and showed in front at the eighth post Then she began to shorten her strides and the finish found her tiring IJourassa made the mistake of rushing her up too quickly instead of making up his ground gradually Lucky Run might have been closer up had Ray saved ground with him at the stretch turn instead of going so wide He lost three or four lengths at the stretch turn and this helped in a great meas ¬ ure to beat him himSL SL Valentine well ridden by Mooney was the winner in the second He was handled with excellent judgment his rider avoiding the fast early pace and reserving his speed until the last quarter Entering the home Btretch St Valentine slipped through next to the rail and wearing Gold Rock down passed him in the final eighth to win going away at the end Gold Rocks race was a good one Taylor made a lot of use of him the first half mile racing the speeding Aversion off her feet and after disposing of the latter at the stretch turn he had nothing loft to stand off the winners chal ¬ lenge Adria was third a length separated her from Gold Rock RockJopagan Jopagan which has been improving with every race showed his quality this afternoon when he made his opponents look cheap in the Piccadilly Purse This was a dash of fiveeighths for which Jopagan was an oddson favorite He was ridden by Thomas began on the outside and went around his rivals with a rush At the far turn he drew away into a commanding lead and at the finish Thomas had him under a pull and was looking backwards Jopagan won in little better than a canter but despite this he clipped a fifth of a second off the track record established by Londlord the other dav
