The only one to engage attention at Churchill Downs was when "Chuck" Walker sent J. K. Maddens Young Prince for three-quarters. The colt, wiih Sammy McGraw up. worked evenly, going the quarter in :26. the half in :.~ 11r.. five-eighths in 1:06 and three-quarters in 1:19%. Osmand and Kiev, .1. K. Wid -tiers Kentucky Derby candidates, were given rather stiff gallops by trainer Pete Coyne jmtm day afternoon. It was the colts regular work day and they would have been out in the morning had a good track pre ailed. Trainer Coyne deferred the work until late in the afternoon in the 1io m- that the track would be fast. Despite much harrowing, the course was still somewhat slow and cuppy. Several hundred people were oti hand to witness the gallops. Osmand, with Karl Sande up, had Feu Follet as workmate. The latter began in front and led to the three-eighths post, wher.-Osmand moved up. They paced like a team to the eighth post, where Osmand drew out and beat his rival by a length. Owing to the cuppy track, Osmand was tired after the work. The fractional time was :2" , :.V "--. l:tt%, 1:44%. The trial was satisfactory to trainer Coyne. Kiev was accompanied by Laddie in h s work, which was also at one mile. They began together and raced with Laddie having a slight advantage to the last sixteenth. where Kiev forged ahead. Coyne instructed the riders to rate their mounts and finish the mile in about 1 :IS.
