♦ « Sweeps Selections At Bowie $ -$ One Best Bet — SPARKLING WATER — In the Sixth Race. Platers will furnish the contention at Bowie today. The entire card of seven races is comprised of claiming numbers and none of the better campaigners will be seen under silks. In spite of the warm sun, the traen is drying out slowly and the prospects? are slim for a fast track before the end of the week. Perhaps the best field will face the barrier in the third race, at three-quarters, for three-year-olds. Porto Bello Gold, Cross Word, Pop Bell and Suky are some of the good ones that are expected to measure strides. With the exception of the second contest, small bands of starters will go to the post. OUT STEP— UPPER CBUST— APPLE PIE. OUT STKP, knocked back at the start of her last out, recovered gamely after her mishap and finished with a rush. She was probably the best in that contest and gets nine pounds less- tomorrow. Track conditions will not bother her and she should atone for her recent defeat. UPPER CRUST was not at her best in the muddy going that prevailed in her last out, but should show a return to her New Orleans form with an improvement in track conditions. The Greentree miss is in excellent condition at tho present time. APPLE PIE was not persevered with in her maiden effort when it was apparent that her stablemate, High Hope, was a strong contender. The daughter of Vindex has worked well and may share in the purse division. DANGEROUS KITTY— THE CODE-SANDS WEPT. DANGEROUS KITTY, which made her first start in many months Wednesday, showed plenty of speed most of the way, but could not match the closing rush of Fable. That race should have conditioned the Skinker filly for this race and she has a good chance to step down in front. THE CODE is another that was plainly short last time out. This fellow favors a heavy course and ran some fair races at Miami. He is in good hands and will go to the post fit and ready. SANDSWEPT was thought to be one of the crack juveniles last year, but he failed to make the grade against the good ones and is now racing with the platers. He showed a high turn of speed in a recent workout and may surprise by taking part of the money. CROSS WORD— SUKY— PORTO BELLO GOLD. CROSS WORD has not been out since the Empire City meeting last fall, but is apparently ready for a hard race. The lluon filly was in Havana during the recent meeting and, although she never faced the barrier, she was twice entered and scratched. She is one of the string that Clarence Buxton freshened up at Columbia. S. C, after the Cuban session. This filly has never raced at three-quarters mile, but she possessed a great closing burst of speed in her shorter races and should take the honors here. SUKY, a filly of some quality, was rated with the best three-year-olds at the New Orleans tracks and should be well up all the way. PORTO BELLO COLD has worked well and has a change, but apparently needs a longer distance. DUCKLING— NORTH BREEZE— HIDALGO. DUCKLING, ever partial to the local course, is making her first start since the Havana meeting, but appears able to turn ; the trick at the first asking. She worked a 1 mile in 1 :.r l% Wednesday morning and is not overburdened under 109 pounds. NORTH j BREEZE is the one to fear. He was beaten by Donarita last out, but Jockey Watters was overconfident and the son of Burtons-ville should have scored. HIDALGO was hampered by the heavy going in his last two races and should show a return to form with an improvement in the course. THE SEER has the early speed of the party, but it is doubtful if he can last long enough to lead the others home. JACQUES— PA RMACHENEE BELLE— LALLY. JACQUES displayed plenty of speed in his last two races, but faltered near the finish each time. Tomorrow he meets slightly cheaper company and should atone for his recent failurts. He is at home in the going and is rapidly approaching his top form. PARMACHEXEE BELLE requires the heaviest kind of a course for her bad legs and may falter in the final drive if the track improves. She looks the best of the others, however, and should not be worse than second. LALLY disappointed last out, when he finished far back of Polly Scott and other poor ones. He can do better, however, and this may be the spot. SPARKLING WATER— TIPPERARY MARY— COMPLAISANCE. SPARKLING WATER has not been out of the money in his last five starts and appears well suited in the mile and seventy yards of the sixth race. He showed plenty of speed in his last race when he finished second to Colonel Seth and, although beaten four lengths, he displayed enough speed to take the measure of the field opposed to him here. TIPPERARY MARY made up much ground in her last race to finish second to Mercedes E., when the latter cantered away from her opponents to win Wednesday. COMPLAISANCE appears to be coming around to winning form and finished fast in her last race after being outrun to the stretch. She appears formidable in this company and figures to be no worse than third. FROSTY BOY— HARLAN— LINGARD. FROSTY BOY, a winner earlier in the week, picks up six pounds over that score, but still appears the best in the final number. The son of Master Robert favors the going and is well suited to the distance. If Marr will rate him behind the early pace, he should pass his rivals in the final eighth. HARLAN could not stay with First Edition over the mile and an eighth course Wednesday, but showed plenty of speed for more than a mile and should be well up at the finish. LIXCAHD was a good second to Compromise in his last out. He displayed rare gameness on that occasion and finishes fast. He should share in the purse division.
