Bxv"?"-""Ji--:v "• "*; --•—• — ~ — mnr ■ .n -■■■ j-aJIJiiUifflMi | REVIEW OF KENTUCKY DERBY CANDIDATES r ■ — • Presentation of Racing Credentials and Other Important Information Osmand, the Reigning Favorite, Scapa Flow, The Satrap, Rip Rap and Other Stars in Second Group of Eligibles « There was no outstanding two-year-old in 1926, such as Pompey, Master Charlie, Sarazen, Morvich, Tryster, Man o War, Sun Briar and Old Rosebud were in their respective years. Though Fair Star, Scapa Flow and Lord Chaucer were the largest money winners in the juvenile division of last year, Osmand probably had the best racing credentials, with only one reverse out of seven starts. Undoubtedly these credentials had much to do with making Osmand the favorite in the "Future Book" on the Kentucky Derby of 1927. The first of such lists to appear shortly after the publication of the Derby entries gave the Widener gelding that honorary position, and he retains it to this day. Never quoted better than 8 to 1, Osmand now holds sway at the reduced figures of 5 to 1. This almost prohibitive price, considering that the Derby is a month off, is due in a great measure to the highly satisfactory manner in which the gelding is training at Churchill Downs, and the added advantage that Earl Sande, Americas premier jockey, will ride him in the big race. Osmands credentials and other data, including the tabulated pedigree of his blood lines, will be found in this, the second part of the review of the Kentucky Derby candidates of 1927, the first of which appeared in yesterdays edition of Daily Racing Form. OSMAND Other highly rated Derby candidates in this second group are Rip Rap, Scapa Flow, The Satrap, Sweepster, Sankari, Tarry, Valorous, Whiskery and War Eagle. Scapa Flow is considered one of the most formidable rivals of Osmand. He won the Futurity at Belmont Park, and, though no winner of that greatest of American two-year-old races has ever as yet annexed the Derby, there are many discriminating judges of horse flesh who believe that this speedy — some say the fastest that has yet appeared — son of the mighty Man o War will be the one to turn the trick. The Satrap is the English beauty for which Mr. DuPont paid 00,000, and which was one of the best two-year-olds last year in the country of his birth. He won four out of five race;;, finishing second when beaten. He fell lame in his last start, and it was thought that his racing days were over. Since arriving in this country the colt appears as sound as the day he was foaled, and on the strength of his showing in exercise gallops at Belmont Park will be shipped to Churchill Downs for more intensive training for the Derby. There is no doubt if the colt stands up under the severe strain of such a preparation he will be a tough opponent for our best on that eventful day in May. Rip Rap has been the surprise of the "Future Book" quotations. Evidently the "Wise Men" of the East, as well as of the West, fear the Broomstick colt, and will take no undue liberties with him. There are good grounds for this fear, however, as Rip Rap won three out of four starts last year, and his victories included a smashing triumph in the Walden Stakes at Pimlico. Rip Rap is likewise trained by Max Hirsch and will accompany the English colt to Louisville when the Hirsch establishment moves west. Sweepster and Sankari are members of the Rancocas Stable, of which the "wizard trainer," Sam Hildreth, is the directing genius. Both these colts did well last year, but if the popular Rancocas silks are seen in the Derby field it is expected that Sweepster will carry them and that polished rider, L. Fator. Valorous and Whiskery are looked upon as the most probable representatives of the powerful H. P. Whitney stable, though there have been rumors of a Whitney Uontiuuc-d ou Hfeeai page; " « Kentucky Derby Review 4 . Continued from first page. "dark horse" in Night Mail, a chestnut colt by Whisk Broom II. — Fly by Night, by Peter Pan, which has never started. Terry is an unbeaten colt by North Star III., which won the only two races in which he started as a two-year-old. He is owned by the theatrical producer, Sam Harris, and is also trained by Max Hirsch, the third Derby candidate in his charge, each of different ownership. War Eagle is another son of Man o War eligible for the Derby. This fact in itself is well worth careful consideration because apparently the offspring of the "horse of the century" prove to be better racers at three than at two years of age. War Eagle created no unusual excitement or wonder last year, but he was one of the stars of the winter racing at Miami, where he won the rich Miami Cup and four other races. Though he failed in a trial race for the Louisiana Derby and was not started in that Jefferson Park feature, his trainer deciding the colt needed a respite from the rigors of a strenuous campaign, he was immediately shipped to Louisville, where it is said he has thrived and taken on considerable weight. War Eagle is owned by E. B. McLean and trained by J. F. Schorr. Here are all the pertinent facts known concerning the racing qualifications of the various Derby candidates appearing in the second group. Not only are the Past Performances of each and every candidate shown, but a recapitulation of the salient points in their racing careers pointed out briefly and concisely as an aid to the student of form in arriving at his conclusions. First in order are presented the tabulated records of the horses in the second group, showing the number of starts, how many times first, second, third and unplaced, together with the amount of money won. These records are complete, embracing all races run, both as a two-year-old and a three-year-old. They are as follows: Hone. Sts. 1st. 2d. 3d. Top. Won. The pedigree of a race horse is always interesting. The breeding of the thoroughbred is no haphazard theory unsupported by facts, but rather au industry of immense proportions and importance that leaves nothing to chance, but is the result of long years of study, experiment and careful analysis. A glance over the blood lines of the more important Derby candidates appearing in the second division, reveals that, so far as heredity is concerned, there is nothing lacking.
