BARBARA VICTORIOUS Diminutive Prince Palatine Filly Wins at Homewood Hats Up Easiest Winner of Day Favorites Successful in the Majority of Races HOMEWOOD 111 June 6 The Cold Stream Studs diminutive Barbara was vic ¬ tress in the Kenwood Purse at one mile the feature of the card at Washington Park to ¬ day Closely following her at the finish was H G Bedwells Cudgeller with Iron Mask II in third place The contest was always between the leading trio the other three starters never figuring in the early racing or in the final result Barbara had L Hardy as her rider and he got her away fast and immediately sent her into the lead Iron Mask II and Cudgel ¬ ler were her followers for the entire dis ¬ tance Barbaras backers experienced anxi ¬ ety after she had reached the stretch when Cudgeller began moving up fast However at a critical point in the last sixteenth the Bedwell representative took a tired swerve towards the inner rail and Barbara continu ¬ ing on a straight course succeeded in finish ¬ ing half a length in front Iron Mask II began giving way steadily in the last eishth but was much better than the others and had little difficulty taking third place Barbara was well backed but Cudgel ¬ ler also had considerable following and there was small difference in their odds oddsCool Cool clear weather contributed much in bringing out a large crowd to Washington Park to witness the sport and they were well rewarded by spectacular contests fea ¬ tured by spirited finishes The course was dull and favored horses of the sturdy type typeFAVORITES FAVORITES FARE WELL WELLThe The victories of a number of favorites enabled the larger portion of the crowd to combine profit with pleasure pleasureHats Hats Up a newcomer here and well back ¬ ed was the easiest winner of the after noon His success came in the fourth race in which he defeated Renbarg in hollow fashion Renbarg displaying suddenly im proved form raced into a good lead soon after the start but when it came to the stretch drive Hats Up drew away from him easily easilyRenbarg Renbarg was forced to a hard effort near the end to outstay Last Cent and Violet Betty The latter was weakly ridden and under stronger riding will improve on this showing I IA A dozen ordinary maiden juveniles began the racing with a sprint at fiveeighths It enabled Retrospection carrying the Long ridges Stable colors to be home in advance under a rousing ride by the veteran J Kederis Helen E the early leader suc ¬ cumbed in the last few strides but was con ¬ siderable distance in advance of Joe Adams which wound up in third place Rolling Star which had been a considerable dis ¬ tance out of it in the early racing closed a big gap in the last eighth eighthTheo Theo Red favorite was home in advance of tire others in the second race It re ¬ quired Earl Pools best effort to land him the victor over Dutch Girl The latter had followed him closest from the start and was in a fair way of taking his measure had the race been at a longer distance The winner while showing good speed for three quarters began finding the route tiresome and in the last sixteenth had to be ridden hard to stay in front Blended which had raced prominently for most of the way held to third place throughout Several in the field that had been well backed always raced far back of the leaders and seemingly found the soft going unsuitable unsuitable3IUTUEL 3IUTUEL FIELD VICTORY VICTORYWildrake Wildrake grouped with others in the field was victor in the third race which brought a dozen to the post He finished in advance of Marvel Dolores with Waponoca in Jhird place placeThe The leading pair were on their bad be ¬ havior before the start but were off faster than the others Marvel Dolores taking the lead accompanied by Wildrake and they continued in this order until the last six ¬ teenth where Wildrako displaced Marvel Dolores and came on to win handily Marvel Dolores held on fairly well and outstayed Waponoca There was considerable activity about Finland but after racing prominently for a halfmile he gave way fast Basha another staunchlybacked one was never prominent after the first quarter quarterAfter After racing apparently hopelessly out of it Hawk Eye a wellbacked one came with a rush through the stretch to down Power for the purse in the sixth race Power had raced with Foreland in the early stages and after disposing of him at the stretch turn seemed to have the race won but Hawk Eye finishing with a rush from last place suc ¬ ceeded after a mild drive in overhauling Power in the last seventy yards yardsL L Gaines made reservations for seven sUills and is shipping from Omaha
