Here and There on the Turf Prospects for Belmont Contention Is Vanishing Buddy Bauers Place Beturn of Crusader As the date for the Belmont Stakes approaches it is to be decided at Bel ¬ mont Park on Saturday Chance Shot stands out with greater prominence The son of Fair Play Quelle Chance that races for Joseph E Widener seems to have nothing to fear from the other threeyearolds in that or any of his other engagements engagementsValorous Valorous which before the running of the Metropolitan Handicap was con ¬ sidered a colt well calculated to give stern battle in the Belmont Stakes will probably not go to the post while even should he be started he could not be seriously considered taking a line through his Metropolitan Handicap race In that race he was well beaten by Osmand and Black Maria and Chance Shot is easily master of Osmand which is a stablemate Then Valorous is not himself and has not been since the running of the Metropolitan Handicap HandicapThe The Harry Payne Whitney campaign started brilliantly when Bostonian won the Preakness Stakes while Whiskery won the Kentucky Derby and Pandera won the Pimlico Oaks Then Bostonian developed a fever that threw him out of training Pandera was whipped in the Kentucky Oaks and Whiskery had to bow to Buddy Bauer in the Fairmount Derby so that there has come a change In the Whitney turf fortunes fortunesSome Some time ago all hope of starting Bostonian in the Belmont Stakes was gone Whiskery was declared from the big race last year and with Valorous 5 amiss it is unlikely that the Whitney col ¬ ors will be shown in the race of next t Saturday SaturdayBut But it is possible that the result of the Fairmount Derby will bring an in ¬ vader in Edward R Bradleys Buddy r Bauer which raced to new importance when he won the Collinsville fixture from the best ones that had started in l the Kentucky Derby This was an al ¬ together unexpected triumph In fact it was so unexpected that Mr Bradley f was not on hand to see the race while 3 William Hurley Dick Thompson and j Barry Shannon all of the Bradley es ¬ tablishment did not consider it worth j while to be on hand handFortunately Fortunately Alfred Johnson first t jockey for the stable was present and j not a little of the credit for the victory 7 came from his faultless riding of the e colt But before the running of the race B Johnson expressed the hope that he e could land Buddy Bauer in fourth place e and save the stake while Mr Bradley started the colt purely out of compli ¬ ment to the Fairmount Jockey Club Then when Buddy Bauer made good so 0 magnificently he stamped himself as a a more worthy opponent of Chance Shot in racing a mile and a half than any y other threeyearold now in training After the running of the Belmont t Stakes there are still two important t threeyearold fixtures to be decided be ¬ fore the end of the month These are el the American Derby of the Illinois s Jockey Club to be decided at the Wash ¬ ington Park course in Chicago June 18 and the Latonia Derby which is down for decision at the Kentucky course June 25 Both of these are at a mile and a half the same distance as the Belmont Stakes and they are calculated to offer the best sort of a race raceBoth Both Chance Shot and Laddie are eligible to the Washington Park feature which is decided just a week later than the Belmont Stakes and it is probable that one or both of them will make the trip from the East Laddie has not yet proved his racing ability in public this year but he will have an opportunity before the date of the American Derby to prove his worth and his showing will decide whether or not he will journey to Chicago As for Buddy Bauer he will be a sure starter barring accident and Mr Bradley now must have high hopes of his colt duplicating the performance of Boot to Boot which won the same race for him last year If the Widener colors are shown at Washington Park it will be a continua ¬ tion of the sporting rivalry between the Widener and the Bradley stables Wideners Haste beat Bradleys Bagen baggage in the first running of the Fair mount Derby last year and on Saturday Bradley evened the score when Buddy Bauer was first in the same race while Wideners Osmand could run no better than third thirdIt It is greatly to be desired that Chance Shot and Buddy Bauer be brought to gether either in the Belmont Stakes or the American Derby or better still in both races This would not seem much of a match before the running of the Fairmount Derby but early in the spring the Bradley contingent had high hopes for Buddy Bauer and in the race of Saturday though he had almost been given up by his stable he proved there was reason for the high esteem in which he was held earlier in the racing year yearThen Then there is still the Latonia Derby after the running of the American Derby and it will conclude a month that has been truly remarkable for the rich threeyearold races racesMay May had its Preakness Stakes and Kentucky Derby with 50000 added to each and this month the valuable races to come are the Belmont Stakes Ameri ¬ can Derby and the Latonia Derby with the Fairmount Derby already decided It is a great month for the threeyear olds and thus far there has been no colt capable of winning two of them themAnd And then of course in discussing what is to come it must not be forgotten that Whiskery must be seriously considered He had a bit of misfortune in the Fair mount Derby renewal and he was giving away eight pounds to only be beaten a halflength by Buddy Bauer His was a sterling race and being ineligible to the Belmont Stakes there is no good reason for his not going after the races in the Middle West It is always of great interest when a turf champion returns to former glory gloryCrusader Crusader made such a return at Bel mont Park on Saturday when he galloped gallopedoff off with the Suburban Handicap under the crushing burden of 127 pounds poundsOf Of course with the return of Crusa der there came disappointment in the i utter failure of Chance Play the elder brother to Chance Shot but withal the triumph of the son of Man o War Warprobably probably brought a satisfaction with the thepatrons patrons of the turf that more than off set the disappointment Crusader was such a dependable champion last year that many good judges considered him himpossibly possibly a better horse than his illus trious daddy while it was unanimously unanimouslyagreed agreed that he was by long odds the best of the various good ones that the son of Fair Play Mahubah has sent to the races Crusader is the only horse to repeat in the Suburban Handicap in its long and glorious history for he won the same race last year And the race was a amarvelously marvelously fast one when the handsome handsomechestnut chestnut raced the mile and a quarter in 202 after having been restrained back of the flying Black Maria and Macaw It was a great return of a great horse and Crusader magnificently atoned for forthe the lapse that made some of the less lessloyal loyal predict that Chance Play would prove the handicap sensation of the year Crusader has come back and Chance Play will have to wipe out his Suburban Handicap defeat before he regains any I of the prestige that threatened the proud 1 place of the Samuel D Riddle champion
