w | NEW YORK TURF NOTES £ § NEW YORK, K. Y„ April 26. Lafe Block, the genial Philadelphia sportsman, looking greatly improved in health, made his first appearance of the season. After the running of the Spinalong Purse, Clifford A. Cochran expressed himself as well pleased with the showing of Genie, one of his candidates for the Kentucky Derby. He might well be pleased when the colt, after carrying all the pace, fought it out gamely, to be beaten only a head by Son o Battle, a four-year-old. James Picarillo claimed Maurice, winner of the first race Tuesday for ,500, from J. W. Bean. John Kermath shipped the steeplechase division of the W. J. Salmon stable to Pim-lico today. Jockey C. Zoeller was suspended for five days by the starter for disobedience at "the post Tuesday. Jockey Goodwin was suspended for five days in the last race Tuesday by the starter. The firing iron was applied to Airley. a two-year-old in the stable of James Gaffney, by Dr. M. J. Adair. Phil Toale has taken over the engagement books of jockeys Clarence Kummer and Frit?: Weiner. Kummer returned to the sa P die this spring at Havre de Grace. He rides at 113 pounds. Max Hirsch left for Havre de Grace for a few days. Sam Harris journed to Belmont Farlt to inspect his three-year-old Terry. J. L. Donovan arrived from Maryland and resumed his duties as agent for J. P. Smith. E. R. Bradley will ship three cars of horses from Lexington to Belmont Park on May 1. J. E. Madden arrived at Belmont Park with four cars of horses. Fifty-two were in the shipment. R. A. Smith arrived at Belmont Park from Laurel Monday with two cars of horses. Another car is due from Havre de Grace the latter part of this week. Gene Austin, well-known handicapper, was an arrival from Ocean Springs, Miss. Mr. Austin will remain for the season. F. W. Barlow, who lost Pheacant via the claiming route at Havre de Grace, was an arrival. Bruce Hover, well-known Albany sportsman, was a first time visitor. John Coyle, who was stricken with a paralytic stroke during the Saratoga meeting last year, made his appearance today. Dinny Higgins, well-known Montreal sportsman, was an arrival for a prolonged stay. J. Shalleck arrived at Jamaica with Carnival Boy, a two-year-old ; Last Bite, Melmor, St. Lawrence and Commissioner Hannon from winter quarters, Lakewood, N. J. The horses have been turned over to Kimball Patterson to train. G. A. Cochran, H. P. Whitney and R. H. Williams left for Kentucky to inspect the horses which they have in that section of the country. Buckram has been selected as the name of the two-year-old Buchan filly which G. A. Cochran paid a record price for last summer. Walter Goff, well-known bookmakers clerk, died last evening in Brooklyn following a brief illness. The deceased was in his forty-ninth year and had been actively connected with racing for over twenty years. J. Henry claimed Linger for ,300 out of the fifth race Wednesday.
