3 Before a crowd of excited fans that packed eery vantage point in the Exposition Park plant Nostaw from the stable of Miss Blanche Watson dem ¬ onstrated his staying ability by winning the Merry Month Handicap todays feature race in handy fashion The former Lord Braedalbane defeated Break of Dawn by five lengths while the latter was a nose before Tommy Lad as the finishing line was passed passedThe The race was over one and onesixteenth miles and though but five horses started it resulted in a good contest Break of Dawn acted as pacemaker and showed the way for half the distance with Nostaw hard held by jockey O Cooper always within striking distance As the leaders passed the far turn Cooper deemed it time to make his move and Nostaw was not long in reaching the front With a two length advantage the Watson gelding turned for home and though it was apparent that he was easily best Cooper evidently rode to instructions by plying the whip and riding him out Break of Dawn was all out at the finish and barely lasted to hold Tommy Lad safe The winner was favorite favoriteFAVORITES FAVORITES SCORE SCOREThe The attendance which has been excep ¬ tionally good since the opening of the meet ¬ ing was slightly increased today and many who were unable to catch a glimpse of the races were forced to follow them via the description over the loud speakers The weather was perfect and the track was bet ¬ ter than it has been at any time during the meeting Certificate sellers and cashiers were kept exceedingly busy throughout the afternoon and the public was successful in selecting many winners winnersThe The Spring Blossom Purse was the sec ¬ ondary feature of the afternoon and came fourth on the program It was a race of five and onehalf furlongs and the red and white colors of C B Irwin were seen in front for the first time at the meeting when Morsun won Charm finished in second places and First Mission was third Morsun rid ¬ den by jockey Moran led all the way He raced to the front at the start and opening a long lead had enough left to resist the fastfinishing Charm The winner was rather lucky to score as both Charm and Old Dutch might have beaten him with better racing luck Both were blocked in the early stages with Old Dutch being the chief suf ¬ ferer The latter showed speed however by racing into contention when clear only to tire from his early efforts while Charm came fast through the stretch and was gaining rapidly at the end endTHRILLING THRILLING FINISH FINISHWingo Wingo a threeyearold son of Peter Quince staged a thrilling stretch battle with Woodface a field horse in the first race and emerged victorious by a nose The race was over threequarters and while Gibbons set the pace Wingo was always in close attendance In the final quarter jockey Waiden went to work on Wingo and the colt cut down the lead of the former sprinting star and got to the front near the end Wood face which had saved ground all the way under one of Morans good rides challenged in the last ten yards but was not quite good enough to get up Tetra Glass the gray gelding was a fastfinishing third thirdThe The second nose finish of the afternoon came with the running of the second wtien Andresito and Christie Flanagan raced to the finish like a team Andresito caught the judges eye and it was his number that was dropped in the winning slot and Christie Flanagan was forced to be content witli sec ¬ ond place Both horses acted badly at the barrier and delayed the start for many minutes Christie Flanagan had the most early speed and set the pace but Andresito was never far back and under hard riding by jockey Logan got up in time Michael Mona han finished third Big Chief which showed such a good effort in his last appearance was well backed in the race but was never a con ¬ tender tenderJones Jones Stock Farms good Cloister filly Peggy J proved to be the first repeater of the meeting when she spreadeagled her opponents to win the third race Prince insisted upon delaying the start When the break came Wigrose showed in front but Peggy J soon dashed to the front and lengthening her lead won easily Jockey Leyland was astride the winner winnerFinnic Finnic lightly regarded led all the way to win the sixth race in which eight horses met Apprentice Dupuy was in the saddle and he hustled his mount into a command ¬ ing early lead While the remainder of the field were desperately trying to over ¬ take him Finnic still retained a good ad ¬ vantage and held a three lengths lead at the end The Orleanian was a fast going second and Faddy got up in time to best Master Samover for thirdplace j
