ENTERTAINING LORD DERBY Distinguished English Sportsman SportsmanHere Here to Witness Running Runningof of Kentucky Derby NEW YORK N T May 3 After spending a quiet weekend following his arrival here on the Aquitania Lord Derby begins a busy round of activities Until May 20 when he will sail for home on the Mauretania the distinguished visitor will have little idle time Monday night Lord Derby will be the guest of honor at a dinner given for him at the RitzCarlton by former Governor and Mrs R Livingstone Beekman of Rhode Island Tuesday night he will be the dinner guest of the Pilgrims and on Wednesday night of the Foreign Relations Association On Thursday luncheon with the English Speaking Union and The Jockey Clubs dinner at the home of William Woodward vicechairman at 9 East EightySixth street are scheduled Membrs of The Jockey Club and other dis ¬ tinguished turf enthusiasts will attend the dinner Next Friday is an idle day and over the weekend Lord Derby will be the guest of Joseph E Widener at the latters Philadelphia home v vOn On May 12 Lord Derby will meet President Hoover at the White House He will be introduced by the British ambassador While in Washington Lord Derby will be enter ¬ tained by secretary of the treasury Andrew Mellon and the Alibi Club which organization will tender him a luncheon luncheonLord Lord Derby will leave for Lexington on May 13 He will be the guest of Mr Widener at Elmendorf Farm Wednesday and Thurs ¬ day before the Derby will be devoted largely to inspecting blue grass breeding farms From Elmendorf Lord Derby will fare forth to visit as many famous farms as possible including E R Bradleys Idle Hour Stock Farm Arthur Hancocks Claiborne Stud Faraway Farm the home of Man o War and other celebrated nurseries nurseriesOn On the eve of the Kentucky Derby Lord Derby will be the dinner guest in Louisville of the Pendennis Club This function will be attended by all the notables of the Ameri ¬ can turf who will gather in Louisville for the Derby A special reviewing stand is being built at Churchill Downs for Lord Derby and his party from which the running of the great race will be witnessed Lord Derby will pre ¬ sent the winning owner and jockey with Derby trophies and after the race he will deliver a speech over the radio which will be carried to England and other countries On Derby Day the noted visitor will be the luncheon guest of the Churchill Downs As ¬ sociation sociationLord Lord Derby will return to New York imme ¬ diately after the race in Mr Wideners pri ¬ vate car and on Monday he will visit Belmont Park where a special race will be run in his honor It will be called the San sovino Handicap and was named for Lord Derbys colt which won the Epsom Derby in 1924 it being only the second time in all the history of the event that an Earl of Derby won it The great race was named for the twelfth Earl of Derby which won the seventh running in 17S7 with Sir Peter Teazle
