AFTERNOON OF UPSETS On Tap Ironsides and Ladder Jamaica Disappointments Brown Wizard Accounts for New Newtown town Claiming Stakes Panuco Big Surprise NEW YORK N Y May 7 Brown Wiz ¬ ard racing for E F Sanford and making makinglis lis first start since last July was winner of the special Wednesday offering of the Metrd Metrdjolitan jolitan Jockey Club when he had no trouble leading home Dr Irving Jacobs Rock Dun with Thomas Cassidys Indian Scout beating J H Louchheims On Tap for the short end of the purse This was the Newtown Claim ¬ ing Stakes with a value of 3075 to the win ¬ ner and decided over the six furlongs dis ¬ tance tanceIt It was a day of racing that was marked by some startling surprises and one was when On Tap could only finish fourth in the fea ¬ ture In the Arizona Handicap there was another unexpected upset when the French Frenchlorse lorse Pariuco easily took the measure of Ironsides Still another occurred occurredt with the t victory of The Afghan over Ladder LadderIt It was another day that was unseasonably warm and the crowd was a big one though three of the six races were for twoyearold maidens There was little time lost at the thejarrier jarrier in the Newtown Claiming Stakes and the start was a good one Black Watcii was first to show as the barrier went up upnit nit Brown Wizard was right with him and On Tap also left fast with the others in close order orderHOLDS HOLDS RIVALS SAFE SAFEFator Fator rushed Brown Wizard along to such good advantage that he was soon two lengths clear of the others On Tap had moved into second place but she was soon doing lier best back of the son of Brown Prince II and unable to cut down his lead Rock Dun and Indian Scout followed these and Black Watch almost at once dropped back Fator saved ground all the way with Brown Wizard and kept him going at a pace that took him out of danger for the remainder of the journey He was more than two lengths clear as he swept past the finish Rock Dun in a driving finish saved sec ¬ ond place from Indian Scout On Tap had tired badly under a stretch drive to drop out of the picture and the others cut no figure figureThere There was a surprise in the Arizona Han ¬ dicap when Panuco the son of Tetrameter which races for J F Byers was an easy Winner over Robert L Gerrys Ironsides with Morton L Schwartz Quarter Deck a distant third but beating Gone Away and Scimitar the only other starters startersFrom From a good start Ironsides was first to show from the barrier but Panuco was right after him and had him headed in the short run to the first turn Once in com ¬ mand Maiben took hold of the French bred and he was good enough to go along in front for the remainder of the journey Leav ¬ ing the back stretch McAtee Challenged with Ironsides and he moved up on the outside until he was lapped on Panuco but Maiben had plenty in reserve to meet the challenge and drew away without much effort On the turn for home McAtee went to a drive in a vain effort to save the day but Panuco simply romped along in front to be winner by four lengths lengthsQuarter Quarter Deck which incidentally was named for both the Preakness and the Ken ¬ tucky Derby raced in third place throughout and was never threatened for that part of the purse though he was five lengths back of Ironsides IronsidesDECIDED DECIDED IMPROVEMENT IMPROVEMENTThe The race run by Panuco was a decided improvement over a recent effort and it would appear that that race had thoroughly fitted him for this victory victoryGrandma Grandma Lapp racing under the silks of Mrs Thomas R Queen was easily best of the maiden juvenile fillies that were sent to the post in the opening dash Beginning well the daughter of Prince Phillip had speed enough to dash out into a long early lead and there was no stage of the running sho was even threatened Four lengths clear as she swung into the stretch Knight had her in hand through the final eighth to be winner by four lengths lengthsA A great fight developed for second place when Mrs John Offermans Janie G Robert L Gerrys Aweless and Frederick Johnsons Dea swept over the line closely lapped in the order named Janie G had been racing along in second place most of the way with Aweless third while Dea was slow to find her racing legs It was only in the final eighth that Janie G tired and the other two were closing on her in a fashion that would have Crawfords The Gen when he beat the imported Cynic from the Howe Stable by a goodly margin marginThere There was another upset in the third race for maiden juveniles when Concord from the Newtondale Stable was an easy winner over Red Russia a son of Stefan the Great from the Greentrec Stable making his first racing effort Third went to J H Louch heims Robrack and back of him were Play lette Norma Conlan and General A There had been such glowing reports about what Red Russia had accomplished in private that he was considered by many as the surest winner of the afternoon though Concord had the advantage of some education educationWhen When the barrier went up General A swerved sharply to the rail and was elimin ¬ ated Red Russia actually began in tront but he was not in command long for Con ¬ cord raced past him into a lead of a couple of lengths Kurtsinger sent the winner right along once he was showing the way and he continued to increase his advantage until at the end he was leading by six lengths Red Russia was second throughout and McAtee stung him with the whip repeatedly to rouse him to a better effort but he would not settle down and while he at all times held Robrack safe to beat him three lengths he was no match for the winner
