BUSY DAY AT LOUISVILLE Kentucky Derby Candidates At ¬ tract Most Attention in Works Sydney Gallant Knight Hilly Champ and andDark Dark Enlry Display Fine Speed Speedon on Fust Track LOUISVILLE Ky May 7 This was an ¬ other busy day for all engaged in the prep ¬ aration of thoroughbreds destined for racing during the nineteenday meeting opening at Churchill Downs Saturday and again candi ¬ dates for the Kentucky Derby to be run Saturday May 17 were in the limelight Such of the outstanding western candidates for the big race as B B Jones Gallant Knight Johnson N Camdens Sydney Mason Hangers Billy Champ Hieatt Bros Star Lassie and H P Headleys Dark Kntry fig ¬ ured in useful workouts and in several in ¬ stances some of the fastest moves of the year in these parts partsSome Some idea of the speed displayed by the Derby eligibles may be obtained from the fact that Sydney ran seveneighths in 1 27 and was eased up at one mile in 1 43 while Gallant Knight sped over a mile in 142 without full effort and Billy Champ tra ¬ versed threequarters in 114 easily easilyThe The track dampened by light rain during the night was in splendid condition and while the mentioned trio have quality the excellent footing contributed to their keen moves movesSydney Sydney never exhibited more desire to run at his swiftest but was kept under restraint and after going a quarter in 23 went on to the end of a half mile in 47 He reached the finish of fiveeighths in 59 and still was being rated along as he completed three quarters in 113 From the end of the seveneighths he was pulling up and came out of the fast trial in good condition It is not unlikely that he will be among the starters in the six and onehalf furlongs race in which High Foot and others of the Derby age meet here Saturday SaturdayIX IX FINE FETTLE FETTLEIn In his easy and impressive gallop Gallant Knight was timed in 25 for the quarter 49 for the half mile and in 114 for threequarters Trainer Kay Spence is satis ¬ fied that this son of Bright Knight and Ethel Gray is in satisfactory racing condition and he too may make his first appearance as a threeyearold Saturday SaturdayBilly Billy Champ ran the quarter in 24 and half in 4S his handy work reflecting a readiness for campaigning campaigningStar Star Lassie among the fillies eligible for the coveted Downs fixture was sent five eighths in 1 05 while Dark Entry went three quarters in 110 easily the half in 51 Both have been racing racingHarry Harry Payne Whitneys Niato and W T Waggoner and Sons Pansy Walker promi ¬ nent among the ninety eligibles for the re ¬ newal of the 10000 added Kentucky Oaks on May 31 the closing day of the meeting attracted attention by their brilliant display of speed The former a daughter of Chantey worked a mile in 1 43 the quarter in 2G half in 51 and threequarters in 115 while Pansy Walker beginning from the barrier ran threequarters in 1 13 handily She went the first threeeighths in 35 half in 48 and fiveeighths in 101 101Gotoit Gotoit and Grizel also among the Whitney Oaks eligibles essayed to race with Niato and while not fully extended found the lat ¬ ter a bit too swift and followed her by some six or seven lengths at the end of the mile for which they were timed in 1 45 45OLDEK OLDEK HORSES DO WELL WELLMr Mr Camdens Honey Locust another Oaks candidate was sent threequarters in 1 15 the half in 49 Not to be outdone by the younger horses The Nut Easter Stockings and Jock intended starters of Mason Hanger B B Jones and E B McLean in Saturdays renewal of the 10000 added Clark Handicap exhibited fine speed and staying ability in distance trials The Nut accompanied by Cady Hill during the first threequarters ran a mile in 1 43 handily while Easter Stockings was breezing all the way in negotiating one mile and an eighth in 157 and Jock breezed a like distance in 157 157The The Nut went the quarter in 25 half in 50 and threequarters in 115 while Easter Stockings went the same distance in 24 49 and 115 She was timed in 143 for the mile and thus matched the effort of Jock over the first eight furlongs of his gal ¬ lop Jock was timed in 24 50 and 116 116Arrivals Arrivals from Lexington today included the stables of J M Hukill R W Collins R L Stivers B B Williams and others Col ¬ lins string included Don Leon winner of the Idle Hour Stakes at Lexington and candi ¬ date for the Bashford Manor Stakes to be run here on May 30 Memorial Day Among those unloaded by Williams was Dick OHara the Kentucky Derby eligible of Patrick H Joyce Chicago sportsman sportsmanA A Baker trainer of Edward F Prichards Tannery one of the Derby choices announced that barring a change in plans the son of Ballot and Blemished will not visit the post before filling the most important engagement of his career Baker is in every way satis ¬ fied with the colts condition and confident of bringing him to the Derby at the top of his form Tannery will have his first work over the Downs course tomorrow morning Baker stated
