LORD DERBYS FAIR ISLE WINS 1000 GUINEAS SPECIAL CABLEGRAM CABLEGRAMNEWMARKET NEWMARKET England May 9 Fair Isle champion juvenile filly last year won the One Thousand Guineas the first of the seasons big stake races for threeyearolds of her sex here today She carried to vic ¬ tory the colors of her absent owner Lord Derby who is in the United States awaiting the running of the Kentucky Derby at Louis ¬ ville villeFair Fair Isle a daughter of Phalaris Scapa Flow and full sister to the fiveyearold Fair ¬ way winner of the St Leger defeated An ¬ thony de Rothschilds Torchere C Wadias Sister Clover and sixteen other starters in the one mile preliminary to the Oaks which will be run at Epsom Downs June C The race culminated in a stirring stretch drive Fair Isle won by a head with Sister Clover one length behind in third place The winner was ridden by Tommy Weston and was the favorite at 7 to 4 Torchere and Sister Clover were 10 to 1 each eachFrom From the start Fair Isle and Captain Thomas Hoggs Grandma raced away in the lead but they soon relinquished it to Mrs C Richs Silver Mount At the halfmile post Silver Mount tired and Fair Isle forged to the front with the Aga Khans QurratAlAin Grandma Sister Clover Lord Howard de Waldens Wedding Favor and Torchere fol ¬ lowing in the order given givenIn In the stretch Sister Clover moved up to dispute the lead with Fair Isle They ran neck and neck and appeared to have the race between them when Torchere suddenly began to overhaul them rapidly Torchere gained fast and Sister Clover gave way Torchere wrested the lead from Fair Isle near tho finish but could not hold it Fair Isle re ¬ sponded with great courage to AVestons call and in the final strides earned the decision
