PREAKNESS TO GALLANTFOX WINS 50000 PRIZE MarylandBred Colt Registers Popular and Decisive Victory Crack Brigade Finishes Second and Snowflake Third Tre ¬ mendous Crowd Present BALTIMORE Md May 9 William Wood ¬ wards Gallant Fox made one more important stride towards the threeyearold champion ¬ ship when after overcoming no end of diffi ¬ culty in the running he was home the winner of the rich Preakness Stakes here this after ¬ noon At the end of the one mile and three sixteenths he was leading Dr T M Cassidys Crack Brigade by threequarters of a length with Walter J Salmons filly Snowflake tak ¬ ing third from J L Pontius Michigan Boy The prize had a net value to the winner of 51925 and the race was run in 200 200The The race was decided before one of the greatest crowds ever assembled at old Pim lico and Gallant Fox a Maryland product of Mr Woodwards Belair Stud the victor was tremendously popular popularIt It was Earl Sande that piloted Gallant Fox and no winner ever returned to the scales received more of an ovation After the finish William Woodward was presented with the Woodlawn Vase by Governor Ritchie and the various ceremonies were carried on through almost continuous applause It was a great renewal of a great race and won by a colt worthy of having his name added to the honor roll It was 4 50 before the saddling bell was rung calling the horses to the post for the Preakness Then followed the usual cere ¬ monies of escorting Governor Ritchie to the stewards stand while the band played My Maryland It was the signal for wild applause as the governor mounted the steps to the pagoda and then followed a real sus ¬ pense as the crowd eagerly awaited the ap ¬ pearance of the horses on the track trackThe The bugle calling the horses from the paddock was sounded at 4 56 and a minute later Gallant Fox with Sande in the sad ¬ dle led the parade This was the signal for more applause as the eleven starters paraded to the post postWilliam William Woodward watched the running from an upper tier box with vice president Curtis CurtisArmageddon Armageddon was responsible for a long delay at the stall gate and after it was found impossible to have him stand quietly he was sent to the outside of the machine The start was a good one and Sande had Gallant Fox off well from his inside post position but Tetrarchal one of the Howe starters showed such a flash of speed that as he came over Gallant Fox was soon in dangerously close quarters on the inside and before the first turn had been reached he had a big task before him to catch the leaders Tetrarchal was filling his assign ¬ ment in setting a fast pace for the benefit of his stablemate Gold Brook and he was doing it well welljEXT jEXT TO THE HAIL HAILSweet Sweet Sentiment was in second place as the field made the turn Gold Brook was just showing the way to Swinfield and then came Armageddon with Gallant Fox back of all these and next to the rail where there was no chance to get through throughSande Sande realized his danger and gradually eased the son of Sir Gallahad III outfrom the inside position and as soon as he found racing room he sent him up on the outside It had cost considerable ground but the colt responded gamely and before the halfmile post was reached he was in contention In the meantime Tetrarchal was through with his pacemaking but Crack Brigade challenged as Gallant Fox drew alongside and the pair made the far turn closely lapped As they raced along lapped they drew away until they were four lengths clear of the others and it had narrowed to a question of staying power Neither would give an inch and stride for stride they fought along well out before the others othersCrack Crack Brigade was hanging on to the Woodward colt with bulldog courage but Gallant Fox would not be denied and Sande was riding with his old time skill as he nursed the colt along Inside the final six ¬ teenth he swung his whip once and then it was that Crack Brigade tired and Gallant Fox was home Ilia winner going away slightly less than a length to the good goodThe The others of the big field were struggling along six furlongs back and of the lot the Continued on thirteenth page PREAKNESS TO GALLANT FOX Continued from first page filly Snowflake proved best when she out gamed Michigan Boy to save third by a length and a half Gold Brook followed the winner of the Louisiana Derby and the others followed along with Full Dress and Tetrarchal in the rear rearThe The race run by Gallant Fox was a par ¬ ticularly brilliant one by reason of his mis ¬ fortunes in the early stages and the ground he was forced to make up in the last five furlongs Crack Brigade suffered no such handicap but his was a magnificent effort when he fought it out with such courage and both he and the winner are surely well qualified to uphold the honor of the East in the running of the Kerttucky Derby DerbyGovernor Governor Ritchie did not proclaim Preak ness Day a state holiday as Governor Samp ¬ son has proclaimed Derby Day in Kentucky but it needed no proclamation to make the running of the Maryland classic a holiday occasion It Avas a holiday at least for both Baltimore and Washington and never before has there been a larger or more representa ¬ tive gathering at the old Hill Top course All of Baltimore seemed to be there while official and social Washington never had such a representation Philadelphia sent over the largest crowd that has been seen at the races all spring while many sportsmen deserted the Jamaica track in New York to be on hand for the running runningThere There could have been no more delightful conditions for the renewal of the famous old prize that had its first running back in 1873 It Avaa a day more like midsummer than early in May and it afforded the show ¬ ing of Preakness costumes that made both the club house stands and the grandstand bright in color and beauty The track was at its best and every setting for the re ¬ newal lent charm to the occasion occasionThe The fact that William Woodwards Gal ¬ lant Fox Avas triumphant was of vast im ¬ portance to the Marylanders for the son of Sir Gallahad III is a product of the state being bred by Mr Woodward at his Belair Stud in St Georges County Four of the riders of previous winners of the Preakness witnessed the running and after the race they gathered at the scales to offer congratulations to the winning jockey These riders were George Barbee rider of the first Avinner Survivor away back in 1873 Sam Fisher who rode Knight of Ellerslie in 1884 Fred Littlefield pilot of Refund when he won under the silks of R W Walden in 1888 and Willie Doyle rider of AV T Ryans Effendi in 1909 1909Man Man o War was the only previous win ¬ ner of the great prize which was repre ¬ sented by his get in the Preakness running The son of Fair Play and Mahubah won the 1920 running and just ten years later he Avas represented by Full Dress and Arma ¬ geddon two of his sons sonsIt It was the first running of the Preakness where the field Avas sent away from a stall gate starting device deviceThe The Lord Baltimore Handicap for three yearolds saw J E Davis Colossal winner when he led home SL Prisca from the Brann castle Stable Avhile the Rancocas Stables Zida just saved third from Chlo Boy and Ned O George W Foremans Kentucky Derby hope Avas a fastfinishing fifth after a particularly rough race raceThe The start Avas a good one Avith Chlo Boy more alert than the others Ned O had left almost in the same stride but as usual he at once dropped out of the running and before long was last Battling On was right with the leaders and he was just showing the way to Chlo Boy when Robertson came over slightly and McCoy took up the son of Oceanic dropping back rather badly This left Chlo Boy clear but in the meantime St Prisca came up as Battle On dropped back and she was soon alongside the son of Dunboyne Then on the stretch turn Chlo Boy bore out rather badly and that virtually eliminated him from serious contention In the meantime Ned O Avas movingup and Quattlebaum was forced to comeoif the rail when he found no opening As he did so the son of Campfire Avas badly pocketed and for the remainder of the journey he vas forced to weave his Avay through and at no time enjoyed racing room While all this Avas going on Ambrose Avas steadily moving up Avith Colossal St Prisca had taken the lead when Colossal ran past the tiring Chlo Boy and then set sail for St Prisca The filly fought along to the last stride but Colossal proved too good for her and in the final strides dropped his head in front frontZida Zida caught Chlo Boy in the last few yards to nose him out for third and Ned O was still fighting along to find racing room lapped on Chlo Boy As the race Avas run it appeared that but for interference much of his own making by his desire to race on the inside Ned O would have been winner
