ST SIMONS STUD RECORD Offspring of Great English Stal ¬ lion Earned 2772800 Caretaker Maintains Son of Galopin Was Per ¬ fect Model of the Thoroughbred Horse Will of His Own Probably nothing can be added to Avhat has already been written about St Simon At the sale of his breeders Prince Batthyany death St Simon was sold to the Duke of Portland for 8000 There are still some people who believe that St Simon Avas pre ¬ vented from running for the Derby by reason of the death of his nominator Prince Batthy ¬ any This is an erroneous belief as St Simon Avas not entered for the Derby or St Leger The Princes only entry for the 1SS4 Derby Avas Arbaces a colt by Galopin Peni ¬ tent Avhich was never started startedThere There are fev who have studied the per ¬ formances of St Simon Avho do not believe he could have Avon the Triple CroAvn if he had been given the chance Before the St Leger in a gallop he gave tAventy pounds and a hollow beating to The Lambkin Avhich won the St Leger Avith Scot Free the Two Thousand Avinner and Harvester beaten off St Simon was victorious in eleven Haces At tAvo he Avon the Halnaker Stakes Maiden Stakes Devonshire Nursery Avith 124 pounds up the Prince of Wales Nursery under 126 pounds and a match of 500 with Duke of Richmond As a threeyearold he took a trial match at one and a half miles Avith Tristan a sixyearold the Newmarket Sec ¬ ond Spring Ascot Cup Gold Cup at New ¬ castle GoedAvood Cup and walked over for the Epsom Gold Cup He Avas retired to the stud undefeated undefeatedJohn John Huby who had the care of St Simon at the peak of his stud career in writing of him said Taking a casual look at him as he stood leisurely in his box nobody Avould have credited him Avith standing more than 153 but the moment he was led outside there was quite a transformation There he looked and in reality Avas 1C hands with a carriage that a king might haAe envied I always thought there Avas something superior both in his action and contour to anything I had ever noticed in any other horse He used to move along just as if made of elastic and although he has transmitted many of his good qualities to his offspring I doubt Avhether AVC shall ever again gaze upon such a perfect model as he Avas AvasThere There AAas a time Avhen St Simon had the reputation of being an eviltempered horse but he Avas nothing of the kind In ¬ deed he might almost haAe been described as a goodtempered horse His highstrung temperament which he possessed to a de ¬ gree necessitated the most gentle and pa ¬ tient treatment It was no use trying to com ¬ pel him to do this that or the other Had brute force been used in his management AAar Avould have been declared at once and either one side or the other Avould haAe had to go down It would not have been St Simon Avhile there Avas a breath of life in him himIn In conformation St Simon Avas almost perfect His shoulder Avas a study So obliquely AAas it placed that it appeared to extend far into his back making the latter look shorter and as a matter of fact it AAas shorter than any horses back I have eAer known With a shoulder so placed there is little Avonder that he showed such marTel our liberty of action His forelegs too AAere beautifully set on and his bone wall hard and good In color he Avas a rich brown with a small star on the forehead Except that he had a feAV gray hairs about his hind heels and fetlocks he possessed no other white marks marksMr Mr Huby in the course of his memoirs of this great horse recalls some amusing incidents On one occasion a rather voluble lady received permission to look at St Simon After lauding him she turned to Mr Huby and said I dont profess to knoAV much about racing but I do remember this horse Avinning the Derby twice Such Avas his fame fameSt St Simon AAas represented on the turf tAventyfour years His first crop appeared on the track in 1889 and there was some of his offspring racing each year until 1912 His stud career Avas even more phenomenal than his track performances Right from the beginning he sired stock of the highest class In his first season he got Signorina Semo ¬ lina Memoir St Serf and other good ones He continued to get the finest of racers throughout his career and it may prove in ¬ teresting to give the amounts he Avon in the different years his stock Avas running runningSt St Simons Record as a Sire of Winners Year Winners Races AVon Aalne Aalne1S9 1S9 9 34 121430 1890 13 27 104020
