W R COE MAIDEN SURPRISES Cesare Accounts for Purse in 1 Southampton Handicap Defeats Starpatic and JCliara In Feature s at Jamaica Letalone Wins Opening Kacc NEW YORK N Y May 13 Benny Crcecli who has won all honors for putting over long priced winners in his short time on mctopolitan tracks scored another feat in this respect this afternoon at Jamaica when he sent out William R Coes Cesare a maiden to win the Southampton Handicap Racing with Frank E Browns Starpalic the Rancocas Stables Khara H P Whitneys Frumpcr and the Belair Studs Sir Ruley Cesare defeated them over the one mile and a sixteenth route in the jocdinary time of 146 for the 4050 first money moneyCesare Cesare never a contender in his only races last year defeated other threeyearolds when he passed Khara inside the seventy yards post and held Starpatic safe in the final strides His margin over the latter was a nose while Khara was two lengths back in third place The others were beaten off offAs As the race was run Starpatic probably was best but the trouble he suffered early in the race caused him to lose considerable ground The start was a good one with Khara immediately sprinting into an early lead In the run to the first turn Starpatic vvas bothered by Sir Ruley and Ellis was forced to take him under restraint On the turn Khara opened up a lead of several lengths while Starpatic and Cesare raced along lapped the latter on the outside Down the back stretch the Kai Sang filly had a lead of four lengths and it was not until the far turn that Cesare and Starpatic at ¬ tempted to move up The pair moved up to ¬ gether with the latter slightly in advance Khara apparently had the race won entering the stretch but the two colts continued to gain on her steadily in the final quarter and catching her tiring at the sixteenth post they were soon past her BY SMALLEST arAKGlN arAKGlNA A hard fight ensued between Cesare and Starpatic for first honors but Cesara man ¬ aged to get his noae in front at the seventy yards post and held his position gamely and his number was hung up upEllis Ellis Starpatics rider claimed a foul but it was not allowed Cesare closed at 30 to 1 1The The H P Whitney stable added another purse to their credit when the pronounced favorite Smear ridden by Workman proved an easy winner The victory completed a double for Workman Fire Top from the M L Schwartz Stable was a driving second before Mrs J H Buschers Zinn The win ¬ ner raced Fire Top into early defeat and at the end had speed in reserve reserveFifteen Fifteen platers started in the opening race of the day and following a length delay at the post the field was sent away The win ¬ ner turned up in George Phillips Letalone ridden by Workman while Sullivan Trail was second before Calamity The winner improved his position steadily in the race moved up fast on the outside on the stretch turn raced Sullivan Trail into defeat and was drawing away at the end Sullivan Trail disposed of Calamity on the turn but tired in the final drive while Calamity was a driving third before Ladala which came again under pressure pressureE003I E003I IN FRONT FRONTThe The Nostrand Claiming Handicap over one mile and seventy yards resulted in a victory for Mary A J Smiths Boom ridden by Laverne Fator Boom showed the way to Sun Mission which races for Dr I Jacobs while Mrs V M Duncans Clean Play was third A false start resulted in which all of the starters but Boom ran a fast furlong Clean Play Wrestler and Sun Mission set the early pace with Clean Play next to the inner rail Wu was close up while Boom was in the rear The same positions Avcre maintained to the far turn where there was a general closing up Wu which moved up fast under urging was soon in close quarters and in trouble while Fator elected to come to the outside Turning for home Wrostler was the one to drop back and then Sun Mis ¬ sion took up the chase in the final furlong Boom shook off the leaders and was drawing away at the finish Sun Mission came again and held on well to outstay Clean Play PlayDunsany Dunsany racing for Mr Pembroke barely managed to get home in front of James But ¬ lers Questionnaire by the narrowest of mar ¬ gins at the end of the third race Kelsay after shaking off his opponents and drawing away on the far turn became overconfident in the final furlong but in the final strides managed to keep Dunsany going long enough to nose out the Butler starter Tuskegee the popular choice from the R Spreckels stable was third thirdThe The field which was cut down by scratches began in perfect alignment and Tuskegee Dunsany and Keep On raced closely lapped for the first three furlongs while Chlo Boy and Questionnaire were close up On the far turn Kelsay drew away with Dunsany and after opening up a safe lead became careless in the final furlong Questionnaire which had improved his position on the out side came with a rush in the stretch but Kelsay managed to sense the danger in time and kept Dunsany going long enough to win Tuskegee was a distant third thirdW W N Adrians The Tattler was winner of the final race of the day in handy fashion over John Asias Pomfret while W R Coes Scots Grey was third The winner bumped and in turn was bumped by Pomfret entering the stretch and after a brief hearing the original finish was altered Scots Grey out ¬ lasted Billie Leonard for the short end of the
