DERBY STARS IN LIMELIGHT Nearly AH Prospective Starters Given Useful Work for Final Trials on Wednesday or Thursday LOUISVILLE Ky May 13 The fifteen of the sixteen probable starters for Saturdays annual renewal of the internationally famous Kentucky Derby quar ¬ tered at local Churchill Downs home of the great fixture were much in the training and racing limelight today All of the quartet of eastern invaders which reached the track Monday were under saddle during training hours this morning and Ned 0 one of the four was under colors in the mile Trial Purse during the afternoon In that final Derby preliminary he op ¬ posed some of the lesser lights among the probable starters and the effort was ex ¬ pected to bring the Campfire gelding and other Derby horses engaged in top condition for Saturdays important one and onequarter miles milesGallant Gallant Fox William Woodwards pro ¬ nounced favorite for the classic Crack Brigade the hopeful of Dr T M Cassidy and William Ziegler Jrs Gone Away which round out the stalwart eastern quartet were given light exercise over the fast track at an early hour The son of Sir Gallahad III was galloped two miles as was Crack Bri ¬ gade and Gone Away after galloping one and onaquarter miles breezed a quarter through the main stretch in 2G 2GEach Each of the trio is scheduled for more exacting work Wednesday and changed track conditions the result of rain this afternoon may keep them within a distance of one and oneeighth miles in obtaining final stiff preparation rather than at one and one quarter miles the Derby route Gallant Fox and Crack Brigade with their severe Preak ness Stakes efforts under their belts may come in for lighter concluding workouts than Gone Away which is scheduled for a trial over nine furlongs Wednesday WednesdayUnder Under the direction of Joe Peters who is in charge of the son of Runantell pending the arrival of trainer W J Speirs the colt will work a mile in his best style and gallop out an additional furlong Peters is satisfied that Gone Away was not gieatly distressed by the trip from New York and in his opin ¬ ion will reach Saturdays engagement in the best of condition Last Saturday ¬ ing race and his trial was one of the most impressive turned in by any of the numer ¬ ous hopefuls Perhaps the outstanding fea ¬ ture of his move was his ability to traverse the final quarter in 25 and this with ¬ out severe effort Working over the exact ¬ ing Derby ground he ran the quarter in 27 was timed in 54 for the half mile and after finishing threequarters in 120 reached the end of a mile in 146 He ran the following eighth in 13 and the final in 12
