UNCLE LUTHER VICTOR Son of King Gorin Wins Derby Trial Easily Ned 0 Second and Dark Entry Third Muddy Footing Pre vails at Churchill Downs LOUISVILLE Ky May 13 Uncle Luther heretofore obscure among the probable start ers for Saturdays fiftysixth renewal of the Kentucky Derby raced his way to a decidedly more conspicuous place among the eligibles when he decisively defeated Ned O an Eastern Derby candidate Dark Entry Broadway Limited Playtime and other cligibles for the impending race in proving the winner of the Trial Purse at Churchill Downs this after It was the final preliminary for the Derby aspirants and its running over st water soaked course brought out the victor as a likely contender particularly so if such foot ¬ ing prevails for Saturdays race Racing into a long lead after a half mile during which jockey R Creese had him under strong restraint the victorious son of King Gorin and Day Dream easily held the much heralded Ned O safe in the stretch and won under restraint by almost two lengths lengthsA A margin of eight lengths separated Ned O from Dark Entry which took third place and this margin together with the ability o Dark Entry to outrun them lowered Broad ¬ way Limited Playtime and the others in Derby estimation Some surprise was occa ¬ sioned when Ned O established as a slow beginner took the lead but he was closely followed by Playtime Niato and the winner winnerDELAY DELAY AT STAIIT STAIITA A long delay and poor start took from the interest in the opening race which resulted in a victory for R A Smiths Overboard which was making his first start of the year He led for the final three of the six furlongs and had a final margin of a length over Fiddler which lost several lengths to the winner at the start and galloped off an eighth of a mile before the start came Ante Bellum which succeeded in showing the way during the first threeeighths lasted for third place in a close finish with Star Play Those most unfortunate at the start were Roll Em Down Vermiculite and Jane Williamson the latter chiefly responsible for the nine minutes delay at the post postClyde Clyde Van Dusen furnished the first win ¬ ner of the current Kentucky season when Miss Chilla the daughter of In Memoriam and Chilla carried his colors to victory by a neck over E B McLeans Outburst and ten other maiden juvenile fillies in the Tulip Purse or second race High Temper ac ¬ counted for third place with Cazanova which enjoyed a brief stay in the lead hold ¬ ing the others safe After sprinting outside Cazanova to the front Miss Chilla drew clear of her opponents but Outburst came through gamely in the final quarter and the winnerls utmost was required to retain the lead just long enough to win High Temper and Rest Easy which finished in fifth place ran close up from the start and aside from early speed exhibited by Regal Lady the others showed nothing of note noteFIELD FIELD HOUSE SCOKES SCOKESPrincess Princess Donna coupled in the mutuel field with Participate and Lucky Nancy raced in front of Fire Under Purple Sand and others over the one mile and onesixteenth distance in the third for which Bogan was favorite The latter displaying poor form in the mud was never a serious factor and followed far back at the end While holding the lead the winner easily withstood Bruno during the first threequarters and after pulling away from him was ridden out to stall off Fire Under and Purple Sand winning by a trifle more than a length The latter pair reached the end a nose apart apartClub Club House campaigned effectively with the best sprinters during the past New Orleans meeting signaled his entrance into Kentucky racing when he scored in the Pewee Valley Purse which was run as the fourth race He splashed his way home only a short distance in advance of the Keeneland Studs Jean Valjean which lost his rider W Lennie when the youngster was jerked from the colt by the barrier C Landolt astride the vic ¬ tor taking no time to note the lack of rider astride Jean Valjean rode out his mount to the fullest Two lengths back of the winner Star Lassie accounted for second place some two lengths in advance of Hot Shot which tired badly after giving the winner a fight for fiveeighths Jean Val jeans ill luck occasioned no little disappoint ¬ ment as he came in for considerable atten ¬ tion Lennie forced into the barrier when his mount lunged in beginning escaped with minor lacerations about the neck
