ODDS -ON FAVORITE FAILS Infinitus Is Beaten by Stylish Mack at Oriental Park. Strongest Mudders Survive Tests on Deep and Holding Track Sun Worship Victor Over Marshall Seth. HAVANA, Cuba, Jan. 2. Pronounced mudders had a field day at Oriental Park this afternoon; in fact none but the stoutest of performers were asked to negotiate the heavy holding track that prevailed. Despite the efforts of a large crew of men and a return of warm sunshine, the track was a veritable quagmire, ankle deep in gluey mud. There was a falling off from the New Years day attendance and no outstanding feature was programed. The fourth race, which was a dash of six furlongs for four-year-olds and upward, brought together a field of seven sprinters of which H. C. Rumages Infinitus was made an odds-on choice. He failed to live up to expectations and chased home Andrew B. Bergers Stylish Mack. A. Sabaths Over Shady was third, while W. H. Welshs Swarm finished in fourth place. The starters were entered to be claimed for ,000 each. Stylish Mack was ridden by Holland and was a neglected factor in the pre-race calculations. It was his first start of the present meeting. The early running was cut out by Arrogant, Swarm and Over Shady, which raced along lapped on each other, with Betty Ann close up while farther back were Stylish Mack and Infinitus. The pacemakers continued to show the way to the stretch turn, where there was a general swing to the outside. Betty Ann was steered through along the inner rail, while Infinitus, which had moved up on the outside of the leader, was carried to the extreme outside. Stylish Mack was steered next to Betty Ann at the turn. Through the final furlong Stylish Mack assumed command and when placed under urging, readily held Infinitus safe. The latter had a wider advantage over Over Shady, which held on well to the end. H. C. Rumages Preferred was accorded the bulk of the support in the second race and he made good in a drive over B. Marlowes Absolutely, while further back in third position was O. Proulx Manager Evers. This race attracted a field of eight season- Continued on second page. Manager Evers : moved up with a rush into second place While Shandygaff and Preferred were close tip, but lapped on each other. These positions were maintained to the stretch turn, Where Roderick brought Preferred up with rush on the outside. The stoutly support- : ed candidate had trouble disposing of the leaders and did not assume command until the last few yards. Absolutely held on well 1 under urging and outlasted Manager Evers, which swerved suddenly to the inside in the final furlong. H G. Bed wells Fast Storm successfully negotiated the quagmire to account for the first race of the day, which was a dash for three-year-olds under claiming conditions. Gilbert was on the winner and he nursed his mount along until the stretch ! was reached, where he moved into contention. Ugly Mug was showing the way at this point and he faltered badly, and dropped back. Fast Storm took command and at th$ finish had a safe advantage over Infi Shotjj while Ugly Mug, running straight as string, lasted to be third.
