CARROLL REID PASSES AWAY Veteran Trainer Dies in Danville, Kentucky, Hospital Noted as Trainer of the Picket. LEXINGTON, Ky., Jan. 2. After an illness of but a few days, Carroll Bailey Reid, noted trainer of thoroughbred horses, died this morning at 9 oclock in Danville Hospital, Danville, Ky. His body was taken to his home at Houstonville, Ky., where funeral services and burial will take place Sunday afternoon. Mr. Reids death was due to gall stones, complicated with a rupture of the intestines. He was 64 years old, was unmarried, and is survived by a sister, Miss Annie, and two brothers, Leslie and James Reid, and a nephew, Carroll Allen, who is training horses his uncle owned. Mr. Reids most notable achievement as a trainer was his winning of the American Derby of 1903 with The Picket, a maiden, which he saddled for Middleton and Jung-bluth, Louisville owners for whom he was then training. He had also been identified with the Bashford Manor establishment of the late George J. Long. For a number of years he trained a few horses of his own, and his last employment was as manager of S. W. Labrots Holly Beach Farm, Annapolis, Md., which position he resigned late in 1930. After that he returned to Houstonville with his nephew, who had been training the Labrot horses, and they got together a small string which they raced last year with fair success. He was one of the best liked of Kentucky trainers, and his passing will be noted with regret by many friends throughout the turf world.
