Brilliant prospects loom for the first running of the Jefferson Derby, ,000 added, which is to be decided at Jefferson Park on January 23, closing day of the meeting. Racing secretary Julius Reeder said Saturday that he anticipated no less than twenty-five nominations for the event and that there was a probability of at least fifteen starters in the one mile event, first Derby of the year. Horsemen have placed their stamp of approval on the distance of one mile, believing that this is the proper route for horses which have just entered their third year and are taking great interest in the race. The nominations close on Thursday, January 14. The value to the winner may approach ,000. This is considered a rich return for the horses the largest this winter and will bring out every formidable thoroughbred eligible. Some of the prospects which will be nominated include three from the barn of J. J. Robinson, Lucky Tom, Flying Don and Rennaissance. The Three Ds will be represented by the crack Texas Knight and Sir Melton. Joseph Leiter will have Princess Camelia. Frankie Seremba will have his 2,600 star Defier in the lists. Sylvester Labrot will nominate Mexico and Springsteel, both regarded as real Derby timber. Our Cherrycote and Chicon will carry the colors of Gorham, Young and Delaney. John Marsch will have Simple Singer and J. A. Fairbairns Stimulator and others. Uma will represent F. A. Carreaud. L. W. Seversori pins his hopes on Volta Maid. J. J. Coughlih has Camp Douglas. The crack Sazerac will represent A. B. Letellier, C. H. Knebelkamps Thundertone, C. V. Whitneys Jack B. and Habanero are others named for the race. From the foregoing list the fans can gain an idea of the class of material on the grounds and all are reported training well and ready for the closing day contest.
