PLANNING FOR CHARITY DAY Only Expense at Jefferson Park Next Sunday Will Be Purse Money Unemployed Benefit. NEW ORLEANS, La., Jan. 18 Racing secretary Julius Reeder is making special efforts to arrange an unusually attractive card for Charity Day, under the auspices of the New Orleans Welfare Association, next Sunday at Jefferson Park. The entire proceeds of the mutuels, gates and concessions will go to the unemployed of New Orleans, through the welfare body, the Jefferson management donating the plant, apparatus and employees, the only expense being the purse money of ,400. There will be seven races carded with the probability of eight, weather permitting. There will be a ,000 handicap for three-year-olds and over as a feature and with the co-operation of horsemen, it should fill to capacity, and spectators should see some of the best horses here in this event. There will be another three-year-old and over race of higher claiming variety, the claiming price ranging up to ,500. This will carry an 00 value. There will be six 00 events for horses of the cheaper calibre. General manager R. S. Eddy, Jr., is making an appeal to horsemen to patronize the charity events, to assist the welfare board in arranging a card which will attract a record attendance. "The business men representing the welfare board are giving up much of their valuable time and money to help the unemployed," said Mr. Eddy, "and we are doing our best to raise a neat sum to help this worthy cause. We are donating our course, lights, tickets and other apparatus incident to the functioning of the plant. Mr. Bryson is donating his starting gate and odds board. The stewards and other officials, as well as mutuel and other employees, their services for the day. The armored car service is lending their money truck. The boxes will be sold by the welfare committee and they also will have charge of the concession money and gate admissions. The admission will be one dollar and only the press and horsemen will be admitted on the regular badges that day. "Horsemen are not expected to donate anything from the purse offered, nor will it be accepted, and for this reason we are making a special appeal to them to assist by entering their best horses. "I have asked the officials to see all the horsemen and ask them to do their part and give us a hand in making welfare day a big success." Tickets will be placed on sale with mutuel clerks at Jefferson and they will assist the ticket committee in a campaign to sell those which visit the track all next week. a
