JEFFERSON DERBY SATURDAY Initial Running of Race Expected to Attract Fifteen Starters. Robinson Pair and J. J. Coughlins Camp Douglas Probable Favorites Lucky Tom Figured Top Weight. NEW ORLEANS, La., Jan. 19. The first running of the Jefferson Derby next Saturday, January 23, will attract a field of at least fifteen, the winner receiving approximately ,000. It will be the most open Derby in years arid supplants the Louisiana Derby, which formerly was an annual event at Jefferson Park. Some of the sires represented in the Jefferson Derby are Chicle, sire of Chicon, leading sire of 1929, and Sir Gallahad HI., leading sire of 1930. Lucky Tom and Flying Don, representatives of J. J. Robinson, will, undoubtedly, carry the top impost in the Derby, as well as favoritism in the betting. Flying Don, in his only start of the winter, finished a close second to Camp Douglas in a six furlongs race after setting the pace most of the distance. J. J. Coughlins Camp Douglas has-won four races at Jefferson this winter and will carry 110 pounds in the Derby. He will attract much attention from many backers as a result of his recent conquest of Flying Don, Colonial Belle, Springsteel and others. He was going fastest at the end and seems to like a distance route. Lucky Tom will probably receive top weight of 120 pounds on account of his winnings this summer, which totaled 3,000. The Three Ds Stable has nominated Texas Knight and Sir Melton for the Derby. Texas Knight is the 0,000 yearling, by Sir Gal ahad III., which also sired Sir Melton. Col. E. R. Bradley will be represented in the Derby by Bertjohn and C. H. Knebelkamp has nominated Thundertone. The Shandon Farm will start Evergold and Prince Rock. C. Januska will pit Sandwrack against the stars in the Derby. Tony Pelleteri, local man, will make his first bid for a local Derby with Colonial Belle. J. F. ONeil has nominated Quando, and from the Pacific Coast comes Willis Kanes Gailmont. Special excursions will be run into New Orleans for the week-end in view of the Jefferson Derby Saturday, Welfare Day races at Jefferson the following day, Sunday, and opening of the Fair Grounds Monday.
