PHAR LAPS AMERICAN DEBUT Australian Champion Not to Race Before Starting in the Agua Caliente Handicap. AGUA CALIENTE, Mexico, Feb. 22. Phar Lap will make his first American start in the Agua Caliente Handicap. There will be no preliminary races for the Australian invader. His owner, D. J. Davis today, stated Phar Lap will make no local appearance before the running of the big race. His training continues daily. He has responded in satisfactory fashion. His rider, jockey Billy Elliot, is up every time he exercises. Mr. Davis, after looking Phar Lap over Sunday, seemed greatly pleased. "Will he need a race?" Mr. Davis was asked. "No, I think not," returned the Australian turfman with a knowing smile. Jockey Elliot busies himself getting American riding pointers by close study of the races through the glasses. The Anzac pilot intends to take a few local mounts shortly. The running of the George Washington Handicap interested him. After seeing Joe Flores and Marine in action, the young visitor was heard to remark they would not trouble Phar Lap in the least.
