GIFT OF ROSES sprinted into the lead soon after the start and, opening up a long lead after leaving the back stretch, lasted to hold THUNDERTONE safe. The latter met early interference, but came fast when clear and was gaining rapidly. DON ROMIRO raced close up and also Finished gamely. MORSNUFF, racing in four bandages, began slowly and, although making up some ground, did not threaten the leaders. KNOCKABOUT tired. SHACKELFORD began poorly. BALDERDASH showed improvement. TYPHOON was done after three-quarters. GUNFIRE tired badly. MISS PERFECTION and LA FIESTA were used up in pacemaking. FORTUNES FAVORITE was never a contender.
