KAWAGOE IN BEST CONDITION Belmont Stakes Eligible Triumphs In First Start This Year Tipton IHder of Patchpocket Second to toKavagoe Kavagoe Lodges Claim of Foul FoulWith With Stewards NEW YORK N Y May 11 George D Widencrs Kawagoe appearing under silks for the first time since the running of the Futurity last year in a game finish was winner of the Woodmere Purse at Jamaica today The son of Sickle was put to a severe test for his first race and he only beat G W Ogles Patchpocket by a head but it was a swiftly run race and the Wide ner representative was in the thick of the pacemaking all the way He is an eligible for the Belmont Stakes with his illustrious stablemate Chicstraw and the performance was enough to indicate that A J Joyner has brought some fit horses from the farm farmIt It was an excellent day of racing offered at the Metropolitan Jockey Club course and with warm weather and a fast track there was plenty of competition in the dif ¬ ferent races racesAfter After the Woodmere Tipton who rode Patchpocket lodged a claim of foul against Kawagoe but ti was not allowed by the stewards There had been some slight bumping between the pair in the stretch but the fault appeared to be mutual and it was not sufficient reason to have any bear ¬ ing on the result resultFrom From a good start in the Woodmere which was a six furlongs dash Miss Merriment was first to show the way but Hunter went right after her with Kawagoe arid the colt was soon alongside Hunter went to the whip on the Sickle colt to hold his position but Kawagoe responded willingly and he went stride for stride with the filly until he had put her away awayGlendye Glendye had been racing third to the pair in the back stretch and The Immortal H and Patchpocket followed closely but these were not in the pace that was costing some ¬ thing and Miss Merriment took considerable out of Kawagoe before she finally surren ¬ dered deredA A furlong out Patchpocket charged along on the outside until he was head and head with the leading pair and he had moved up so readily that he looked all over a win ¬ ner Kawagoe was not ready to give up however and as Hunter called on him with hands and heels he fought along gamely to still have his head in front at the end At the finish Kawagoe and Patchpocket shook off Miss Merriment to beat her four lengths and she was so thoroughly tired after hav ¬ ing raced with the winner that she only beat Glendye by a head Glendye like Kawagoe is an eligible for the Belmont BelmontThe The Dahlia Purse a six furlongs dash for threeyearold fillies brought an excellent contest in which a pair saddled by James Fitzsimmons finished first and second when Dusky Princess was winner for the Wheat ley Stable and William Woodwards Fleam raced second Samuel D Riddles Proud Girl was a close third just beating Water witch and Watch Her HerLittle Little Lad owned by J J Robinson was claimed out of the fifth race Wednesday at Jamaica by G W Ogle for 2000 2000The The steeplechase horses owned by J E Widener arrived at Belmont Park fr6m Philadelphia in charge of Dolly Byers ByersJohn John Sanford of the Hurricana Stud was among the first time visitors
