ILLINOIS DERBY OUTLOOK Preparations Under Way to Enter I tain Record Crowd at Aurora LatesteRaces and WorkoutSvof Principal PrincipalCandidates Candidates Indicate Great Contest Contestlor lor 10000 Added Prize AURORA 111 May 18 As time draws near for the running of the 10000 Illinois Derby which will have its renewal next Wednesday extensive preparations are un ¬ der way at Exposition Park to handle the vast throng which is expected to be on hand to witness the big race and no item which will add to the comfort of the patrons is being overlooked General manager Robert S Eddy is supervising the work personally directing the large force in every move Joseph Cattarinich principal director is an ¬ other of the officials that is exerting every effort to make the race a success and the day a gala one oneWhile While many other track owners deemed it wise to reduce the purses for their stakes Cattarinich and his associates saw fit to in ¬ crease the added money for the Illinois Derby to 10000 which doubled its value This may seem insignificant but no such offerings have ever been tendered to the horsemen at the Fox Valley course even in the boom days and in increasing the stake as the Aurora management has done the stake takes rank among the most valuable offerings of the year for performers of the threeyearold division Only ten races for horses of that age netted the winner more than 10000 in 1933 not one of the twenty stakes decided for the threeyearolds reached its peak last season and a depreci ¬ ation of 319105 was noted from previous purse offerings while the outstanding three yearold prize had 50000 attached attachedA A much stronger field than in the first running is certain for the Illinois Derby this year and among those that will vie for hon ¬ ors are the outstanding threeyearolds in the stables of Illinois owners which will be augmented by the great number of invaders from Kentucky New York and other states With the campaign for the threeyearold championship well under way there should be no excuse for any of the starters being unable to put forth their best effort on ac ¬ count of lack of fitness which is an assur ¬ ance that the winner will have strong con ¬ tention before closing the engagement engagementThe The sensational work of William Sachsen Continued on twentyninth page ILLINOIS DERBY OUTLOOK OUTLOOKContinued Continued from first page maiers Plight at Churchill Thursday when he galloped one mile and oneeighth in 154 over the track which was termed good indicates that the Texas Derby win ¬ ner will be a formidable factor He was accompanied by Indian Salute another of the Sachsenmaier representatives that is eligible for the big race and the fact that Indian Salute failed to keep pace with Plight makes the work of the latter more signficant Had the Churchill course been fast Plight would undoubtedly have turned in a much faster work Going the initial quarter in 25 flat the son of Busy American continued at an even pace and went to the half in 49 and began to pull away from Indian Salute and completed the mile in 140 to finish the mile and oneeighth in hand while Indian Salute was subjected to strong pressure to negotiate the same dis ¬ tance in 155 155Identify Identify another probable starter turned in an encouraging performance when he was successful in his engagement at Belmont Park Thursday Under an impost of 111 pounds he ran the threequarters in 112 flat turning back a formidable band of threeyearolds to gain his conquest by two lengths and a half E R Bradleys Blue Again was another candidate which earned brackets Thursday His performance over the same distance and track was timed in 112 but he is definitely declared out of the stake according to a telegram received from E R Bradley this morning when he inferred the distance too far for his colt a son of Black Servant ServantH H P Headleys Thomasville made the best showing of any of the candidates that were under colors Thursday when he accounted for the DetroitLeland Purse cofeature with the best offering at Detroit opening day The Headley colt shouldered 107 pounds in his engagement and raced the one mile and onesixteenth in track record time covering the distance in 144 with his nearest op ¬ ponent two lengths and onehalf in his wake wakeJ J W Parrishs New Deal gave an exceed ¬ ingly good performance at Churchill when pitted against older performers He finished second a head back of Pot au Brooms in the principal offering titled the Crab Or ¬ chard Purse The track which had dried out considerably was fast for this race and the time recorded for the mile distance was 137 flat and behind New Deal was Advising Anna one of the leading threeyearold fil ¬ lies of 1933 1933The The following are the probable starters
