SHANDON FARM VICTOR Evergold Defeats Sazerac by Length at Churchill Downs Good Weather Responsible for Big Crowd Governor Laffoon Again Present LOUISVILLE Ky May 18 Evergold from the Shandon Farm of Patrick A Nash and Richard J Nash of Chicago won the principal race on the semifinal days pro ¬ gram of the Churchill Downs spring meet ¬ ing at that historic course today This was the French Lick Springs Handicap and al ¬ though only four started it was interestingly contested The fiveyearold winner scored under urging and by but little more than a length as Sazerac and Leros fought it out to a head finish for second awarded the former Gift of Roses was in the rear rearCarrying Carrying 109 pounds the Shandon sprinter went to the front after reaching the turn where he displaced Gift of Roses at the head of the field At the time Evergold advanced into the lead he was bearing out badly He continued to race wide as he increased his advantage on the stretch turn where Gift of Roses was brought out forcing Leros to follow a course near the center of the track All the while Sazerac in competition for the first time in almost a year was saving ground groundNear Near the last furlong the winner contin ¬ ued to increase his margin and it was well that he did as his strides shortened badly in the last sixteenth A Richard being obliged to drive him to the utmost as Saz ¬ erac and Leros drew nearer with each stride The victor however succeeded in retaining a clear lead with Sazerac getting up in the closing strides to take second over Leros LerosThe The victor second choice in the betting was saddled by J J Greely Sr Official time was 112 112With With fine weather again the order an ¬ other large crowd attended Governor Ruby Laffoon who is becoming quite a regular again graced the course with his presence Older presenceOlder maidens provided the competition in the opening race at six furlongs which resulted formfully when J E Wideners Fairsickle was the winner The threeyear old daughter of Sickle and Be Fair raced under stout restraint until the last fivesix ¬ teenths where she quickly went into the lead there to remain She beat Vellum a length and a half while six lengths farther back came Barbara Carom which set the early pace paceQuasimodo1 Quasimodo1 a starter in the Kentucky Derby was well up to the stretch where he dropped handlingThe out of it under weak handling The Peconic Stables Home Work dropped down a few notches scored his first victory of the year when he defeated Broadcaster Wise Dream and five others including jthe shortpriced favorite Little Connelly over threequarters in the second race raceHerb Herb Bagur brought Jhe Broomstick geld ¬ ing from a good distance back in the stretch and heading Broadcaster piled up a winning margin of one length and a half over the runnerup Tiring in the drive Wise Dream which set much of the pace barely lasted to account for third aver the fastfinishing Bourbon Prince PrinceFurnishing Furnishing one of the more stunning form upheavals of the meeting and completing the longest priced Daily Double of the meeting Grania racing for Dan Lehan vet ¬ eran Louisville turfman finished in front of a band of older maidens in the third race also over six furlongs The Lehah filly returned straight odds of 40 to 1 and cou ¬ pled with Home Work in the Double paid 132880 132880Driving Driving through on the inside in the stretch where Dark Devil which was lead ¬ ing at the time swerved and going beyond the center of the track impeded Spanish Red further aiding her Grania raced to a lucky win
