Belmont Stakes since 1867 one of the greatest races for threeyearolds in this country if not the most popular will be renewed for the sixtyseventh time Saturday after ¬ noon at Belmont Park with Omaha a strong favorite to establish himself as the Bahrain of America Opposing the rangy longstriding colt that will sport the Belair silks of William Woodward will be five others chief of which is Rosemont victor over the son of Gallant Fox two weeks ago in the Withers Offered over this long testing halfthe route of one mile and a half the Belmont Stakes will have a gross value of 48230 if all six overnight eligibles pass the scales thus being the richest threeyear old event in the land Supporting the Bel ¬ mont Stakes will be two other features the National Stallion Stakes for twoyearolds with a likely gross value of 18890 and the Meadow Brook Steeplechase Handicap worth 2250 2250With With fair weather likely a crowd second only to the Memorial Day attendance is expected at the beautiful Nassau course which ends its twentytwo day spring meet ¬ ing Saturday even though Omaha is con ceded to be a standout in the Belmont Stakes StakesCAN CAN KOSEMONT REPEAT REPEATMost Most of the Belmont Stakes interest apart from that devoted to Omaha centers in Rosemont which ran the fastest mile of the meeting in winning the Withers for the Fox catcher Farms Stable of William Dupont Jr In that event Omaha and Rosemont reached the stretch practically on even terms but the latter moved away through the final straightaway Partisans of the big Belair colt however are firm in their conviction that over the much greater Bel ¬ mont distance Omaha not only will run down Rosemont but his other opponents as well wellA A sensational workout recently by Cold Shoulder ofA has catapulted defeat Omaha having finished second to him in the Preakness The Bel air colorbearer defeated him easily in Mary ¬ land and Firethorn although a natural router is given little chance to reverse tha decision decisionCompleting Completing the Belmont field will be Sir Beverley a stablemate of Omaha and Gold Foam property of Alvin Untermeyer which has been a mile and a quarter in 205 in preparation for the event Neither Sir Bev Continued on twentyseventh page 67TH BELMONT STAKES TODAY Continued from first page erley nor Gold Foam possess records en ¬ titling them to much consideration for the Belmont Stakes and the latter probably will be the long shot of the field fieldOmaha Omaha seeks to become the third colt to complete a victory in Americas Triple Crown which consists of the Kentucky Der ¬ by and Preakness as well as the Belmont Stakes His sire Gallant Fox turned the trick five years ago and Sir Barton was the first to sweep through the three noted events in 1919 A victory for the big chest ¬ nut which has been prepared for the race by the veteran James Fitzsimmons will be the third for Woodward whose redspotted white jacket was borne to success in the race by Gallant Fox and Faireno None of the other owners represented in the race has ever had the pleasure of leading in a Belmont winner winnerOnly Only Omha and Rosemont were given speed trials Friday morning to sharpen them up for their engagement and both were sent over the five furlongs distance The former working at Aqueduct was timed in 100 whereas Rosemont was timed in 101 smoothlyAs at Belmont Both went along smoothly As in his other engagements this spring Omaha will be entrusted to jockey William Saunders Raymond Workman drew the assignment on Firethorn and Wayne Wright probably will guide Rosemont as he did in the Withers Thomas Malley will look after Sir Beverley while Don Meade and John Bejshak are expected to pilot Gold Foam and Cold Shoulder although Sam Renick may be up on the latter in place of the veteran Vanderbilt jockey jockeyBecause Because of the sensational manner in which he won at the first asking Thursday C V Whitneys Triumphant coupled with Savings may rule the favorite to capture the twentythird running of the National Stallion Stakes over the Ogden and H C Phipps entry of White Cockade and Casca pedia
