UPPERMOST AS GOOD AS EVER Makes First Start of Year at To ¬ ronto and Romps to Easy Vic ¬ tory Track Muddy TORONTO Ont June 7 Uppermost re ¬ cently obtained by H C Hatch and making her first start of the year showed her su ¬ periority over four other good sprinters in the Old Fort Purse an allowance affair that served as the fifth and best offering at the Lake Shore course of the Long Branch Jockey Club today Absent from ac ¬ tive racing since October Uppermost re ¬ turned to competition in the pink of condi ¬ tion judging by her splendid achievement and splashed her way to a sixlength tri ¬ umph to lead J E Smallmans Canterboy over a track that was deep in mud Land ¬ ing in third position and beaten two lengths for the place honors came Donna Julia of the Parkwood Stable while C Smythes Di ¬ rect Hit led home the only other starter Poop Deck which performed for C W Browne Jr JrMuch Much interest was given the headline event by the appearance of Uppermost and Canterboy which were making their initial Canadian debut but the former M L Schwartz miss which performed with the best in the twoyearold division last season was easily mistress of the threeyearolds that opposed her herRacing Racing Into a lead of three lengths soon after the field left the stall gates Uppermost displayed a fondness for the prevailing track conditions and at no stage of the journey which resulted in a hollow victory was the Hatch miss in danger of being defeated At the end Uppermost was under strong re ¬ straint by S Young winning by a half dozen lengths lengthsRain Rain that fell unceasingly throughout the night and all during the third day of the Long Branch Jockey Clubs meeting brought about muddy track conditions but fortu ¬ nately the program held up well and some interesting racing was provided for the pa ¬ trons
