MUDLARKS HAVE INNING Horses Partial to Soft Footing in Covington Limelight Heavy Overnight Rains Leave Water soaked Surface for Days Sport at Latonia Track LATONIA Ky June 17 Beaver Dam mud running son of Nocturnal and Beguin added more lustre to his record when he accounted for the Dixie Highway Purse which headed a rather good offday program here The winner held at almost prohibi ¬ tive odds never left the final result in doubt after the first quarter It was at that point that he raced past High Diver which had assumed command after the start and won thereafter High Diver was good enough to finish second after forcing the pace through ¬ out while Open Hearth raced gamely to take third thirdBring Bring Back and Carroll Day which round ¬ ed out the small but select field were never dangerous contenders and raced far back from the start Heavy overnight rains gave the track an ¬ other drenching and there was plenty of water on the course when the afternoons sport began After the fourth race the soil began to shed its moisture There was an exceptionally good crowd out to witness the sport which was dominated by performers partial to the soft track Favorites did not fare so badly accounting for three of the opening six races racesEASY EASY SUCCESS FOB TEXACE TEXACEJockey Jockey Lee Canfield began the day with a winner when he piloted J W Parrishs Tenace to an easy win in the opening race in which seven juveniles matched strides over the fiveeighths course The winner which was favorite never left the ultimate result in doubt after turning for home where she drew out gradually and won by two lengths Joaney B closed in second place having a decisive margin over the illfated Miss Lizzie which almost went down when blocked sharply on the turn Woddway among the choices in this failed to be dangerous and from the manner in which he negotiated it was apparent it was not to his liking Insulated making his first start was another that could hardly untrack himself in the murl murlMilton Milton Rieser popular Kentuckian sad ¬ dled another winner for his wife when he sent Parade Step to the post in the second race The victor given a clever ride by the veteran Willie Garner was taken in hand when Score dashed to the front but as they approached the stretch Garner sent his mount to the front He maintained his po ¬ sition to the end but it required some strong riding to keep him safe from the challenge of Score which came again and there was but half a length separating them at the end Roberta was third a length away SOUTHS ROUGH RIDING RIDINGJockey Jockey George South tried his hand at rough riding and made a good job of it when he eliminated no less than two of the seven contenders in the third race The maneuvers he went through were exceed ¬ ingly beneficial to his mount Snow Fairy and virtually clinched the victory for her On two occasions during the running South caused some of the starters to pull up First it was Nordrie that suffered by his daring roughness when he piled up three of the horses which were staging a battle for the lead and which enabled Emmie R to get to the front The latter was giving ground gradually at the eighth post but to make victory certain South forced Vercher to take her out of the race or else go down After the scramble at the eighth post Nor ¬ drie was able to come on and finish second with Golden Pigeon third thirdMaidens Maidens of the inferior type furnished the contest in the fourth seven testing their speed and stamina over the one mile and onesixteenth route The winner was Ta bora which raced as if much the best After being sharply impeded leaving the post Tabora was again blocked on the turn approaching the stretch Then to cap the climax after apprentice A Fernandez got her to the front at the seventy yard post he began easing up and was nearly beaten His mount had too much left however and he got her going to hold her safe from the rush of Swift Express Swift Express came from a good distance back to down Softly Continued on twentyseventh page MUDLARKS HAVE INNING Continued from first page Come for second place after the latter had raced in front early Reptelle was the fa ¬ vorite for this but could not keep up after forcing the pace to the stretch stretchAnother Another band of lower grade distance per ¬ formers clashed in the fifth race which was won by A J Stallings Royal Sport Dis ¬ playing a decided liking for the going the winner found it no difficult task to wear down the leaders after racing back of the pace for half the distance He then came on to show the way to the finish being one and onehalf lengths in front of Lucy Athanette was third leading home the fa ¬ vored Vesee and three others The winner raced as if much the best and it was all that Verclier could do to hold him while trying to rate him so eager was his mount to run He had to be allowed to go to the front approaching the stretch and from then on he had things his own way
