very important races the American Derby and the Brooklyn Handicap feature Saturdays program and they promise to en ¬ gage just about all the best threeyearolds in the country Omaha leading member of the division is being groomed for the Brooklyn while those which would knock him from his lofty perch will participate in the American Derby The latter event fea ¬ ture Of the Washington Park meeting is the richer of the two with its 25000 added purse Only 10000 is available in the Aquer duct event but with the Dwyer coming on a week later at the same course William Woodward decided against Omaha making a trip away from home at this time He promises to be present for the Classic when he will defend his premier claim to the championship against contemporaries devel ¬ oped by the American Derby DerbyOmahas Omahas absence from the American Der ¬ by causes the event to lose some of its prestige but a better race may come out of it Without the Eclair Stud star the mile and a quarter affair is pretty much of an open affair with the leading contestants appearing to be Roman Soldier and the E R Bradley pair of smart fillies Black Helen and Bloodroot Elwood Sachsenmaier and Phil Reuter knew what they were about when they refused a handsome offer for the good son of Cohort last week learning that Omaha would not run in the Detroit Derby and at that time was in the doubtful class about participation in the American Derby Roman Soldier added 17775 to his earn ¬ ings in scoring at Detroit and his value has Continued on ninth pagej HERE AND THERE ON THE TURF TURFContinued Continued from second page not decreased that much If he is triumph ¬ ant again this Saturday he will have earned just about as much as was offered for him The light vacation given Roman Soldier perhaps was just what he needed as he was at his best in the Detroit Derby in which he carried 123 pounds giving weight to each of his opponents save Sun Portland and beat them cleverly His time of 158 for the mile and threesixteenths was just one fifth of a second slower than the mark made by Cavalcade a year ago By virtue of his Detroit Derby triumph Roman Sol ¬ dier joins with Black Helen in carrying top impost in the American Derby Each will have three pounds off scale by virtue of not winning a threeyearold race worth 25000 although one valued above 15000 Both of these clever campaigners will have their work cut out for them because of the weight disadvantage disadvantageSun Sun Portland which defeated Roman Sol ¬ dier in the Illinois Derby in which he was receiving eight pounds found the Cohort colt his superior at level weights but he will not have the chance of availing Himself of the two pounds he vvould receive in the American Derby because of not being en ¬ tered However he will get his opportunity in the Classic Blackbirder Cold Shoulder and Firthorn which were beaten in the De ¬ troit Derby will have eight pounds off scale in Saturdays attraction but they will have to do better than they did in the Motor City to be lacors in the Washington Park spe j cial Cold Shoulder and Firethorn might have found the Detroit Derby with its shorter distance coming too soon after the Belmont Stakes in which they had unsuc ¬ cessful although hard tries at beating Omaha OmahaThe The principal threat for the American Derby appears to be Bloodroot which had to come to Black Helens rescue Saturday in an allowance race when Count Arthur took hold of the latter filly in the stretch She carried 121 pounds in that fastrun test at a mile and seventy yards giving fourteen pounds on the scale to Count Arthur four to Nellie Flag and seven to Tearout the latter winner of the Latonia Derby Tri the American Derby the daughter of Blue Larkspur will have eight pounds off scale which means that her impost will be 113 pounds She has excellent speed in addition to being a natural distance runner and evi ¬ dently is possessed of much class She could have won the Coaching Club American Oaks being held back to permit Black Helen to triumph and her trainer William Hurley is convinced she showed a winning effort in the Chesapeake Stakes which was taken by Plat Eye then at the top of his form formCount Count Arthur and Nellie Flag are other American Derby hopefuls that may be con ¬ sidered troublesome The former lost much ground in his race Saturday and held on with rare determination He gets every ¬ thing but the maiden allowance and seems to be a colt with a fondness for the mile and a quarter distance Nellie Flag leading twoyearold filly last season and fourth in the Kentucky Derby after having had a rough trip was making her first start after a layoff She was away very poorly but made up much ground on the turn only to falter near the finish That effort should do her much good In her best form Nellie Flag would give an excellent account of herself Saturday Everything considered the American Derby shapes up as a much keener race with Omaha absent and the event should uncover a worthy challenger for the leadership now held by the Belair ace
