PREPARE FOR CHALLENGE CUP Detroits Next Feature 25000 Af ¬ fair for Handicap Stars Roman Soldier May Race Against Caval ¬ cade Head Play Discovery and Azucar on June 29 DETROIT Mich June 17 With its 25000 Derby successfully out of the way the Detroit Racing Association today be ¬ gan active preparation for its Challenge Cup for threeyearolds and upward 25000 added at a mile and threesixteenths to be run on June 29 29The The event will have a tremendous sport ¬ ing interest inasmuch as it will determine whether Cavalcade is to come back to the races the champion he left them in 1934 Mrs Isabel Dodge Sloanes colt will go down into the history of American racing as the prize hardluck horse of all times timesIn In the Challenge Cup he will meet serious competition Head Play demonstrated Thursday in the Derby Week Special that he is probably in the best form of his whole career as a racehorse and there are those who believe that at the present time he is superior to any horse in training trainingThen Then too it is definitely known that Az ¬ ucar will be a better horse in his next race It is a wellknown fact that in his prepara ¬ tion for the Santa Anita Handicap Azucar went distinctly sour and it has been to avoid a repetition that the horse has been brought back to the races without any gruelling process of training Competent trainers believe that Thursdays race is just what he needed neededDiscovery Discovery is the mystery horse of the race One of his assistant trainers in discuss ¬ ing the horse the other day stated that even the stable could not understand why the horse did not show the form that he dis ¬ played in 1934 He is sound as a dollar not in any sense a moody horse and gives cheerfully everything he has in his work ¬ outs but in races he does not seem to have the snap and vigor that he had when at his best in 1934 He is liable however to snap out of this at any moment and when he does the horse that beats him will know that he has been in a horse race raceThe The entry of Roman Soldier probably the best of the western threeyearolds gives an added interest to the race as it will probably be the first time during the season that a topnotch threeyearold has hooked up with those of the older division Under the weight alignment of weightforage which governs the conditions of the race Roman Soldier will carry 114 pounds to Cavalcades 126 Whether this will bring them together or not remains to be seen seenThe The conditions of the race which limit the entries to horses that have won 40000 or more in the older division and 20000 or more in the threeyearold division must of necessity limit the field but there is no question but that what it lacks in numbers it will make up in quality
