Chero ¬ kee a big favorite with a surprisingly large crowd for a wet dreary day was the out ¬ standing performer in todays muddy track racing at Washington Park Performing1 smartly in the tough going the threeyear old Cherokee Pongee gelding carried the burnt orange and black silks of the Chicaeo owned L E Koromorus stable to a decisive score over five others of his age in the Thomas Purse which featured featuredOur Our Reigh furnished by the stable of Mrs John D Hertz also of Chicago and a prob ¬ able starter in Saturdays renewal of the American Derby finished second as H P Headleys Whopper another American Derby eligible saved third honors for Ken ¬ tucky tuckyGamaliel Gamaliel Torp Nancy and Countess Bina completed the field and finished in that or ¬ der They were badly beaten Gamaliel lead ¬ ing Toro Nancy by eight lengths as he bowed to Whopper by a length and one half Margins of three lengths separated the three leaders and had not the winner veered to the inside in the last seventy yards his victory might have been even more decisive He raced the distance under top weight of 113 pounds in 141 and was ably ridden by Jimmy King KingToro Toro Nancy started out as if she would prove the one to give the victor the most trouble but after racing almost five fur ¬ longs in front and under restraint tired badly as her rider asked her for something more With the Northway Stable filly fall ¬ ing back rapidly Chief Cherokee sped into a long lead with Whopper nearest in pur ¬ suit and Our Reigh beginning the late rush with which he brought down Gamaliel and Whopper in the last furlong furlongHowever However Whoppers whirlwind finish sturdy as it was in no wise endangered the winner King keeping from three to four lengths in the van throughout the stretch racing Davisons colors had to be much the best to score in the second race for three yearolds After delaying the start she left in a bad tangle but upon reaching the final quarter mowed down her rivals in rapid succession and went under the wire a sood length before Petee Blue The latter was the first to head the early pacemaker Eve ¬ ning Gown and led by two lengths entering the final eighth but the advantage did not save him Minor honors went to Weelukle Evening Gown quitting so badly in the stretch run that she was in front of only one contestant at the finish Lo was odds on in the betting She leaders in the stretch and was racing away from the runnerup and early pacemaker Lotofus as she passed the lino of finish a length before the latter Some three lengths intervened between Lotofus and Bamboo which was the next to finish and Opening Night led the others to the judges judgesCaw Caw Caw gave the public choices their third victory of the day when he turned back Fritter Circle Sea Eagle and four oth ¬ ers in the sixth race over seven furlongs The winner was more than good enough to overcome a tardy start winning by three lengths C Parvin in Mrs A M Creechs Bilks piloted the
