SURPRISE DERBY OF 1882 In 1882, the Dwyer Brothers Runnymede was a strong winter favorite for the Kentucky Derby and went to the post at 4 to 5, but Apollo, owned and trained by Green ! Morris, of New Orleans, won the race at odds of 10 to 1. However, Runnymede was a great race horse as he showed later when he won the Clark Stakes, with Babcock second and Apollo third. Runnymede proved to be about the best three-year-old of his year. He won the Tidal Stakes, Coney Island Derby, Lorillard Stakes, etc., after he was taken back east. The three-year-old racing career of Runnymede was analogous to that of Blue Larkspur — both of them were defeated in the Kentucky Derby and both later wiped out that defeat and became acknowledged champions. *
