MONTROSE AT ODDS OF 10 TO 1 Banburg was the favorite for the Derby in 1887, at 7 to 6; Jim Gore, a son of Hindoo, at 3 to 1; Pendennis, 4 to 1; Ban Yan, at 5 to 1; Jacobin, at 6 to 1; Clarion at 10 to 1, and Montrose at 10 to 1. Montrose won easily with Jim Gore second and Jacobin third. The late Allen W. Thurman of Columbus, Ohio, later purchased Montrose and brought him into Ohio to be used as a stallion on his stock farm in Madison County. Here the horse had little opportunity as a sire yet he sent some good winners to the Chicago races; among the number was W. C. T., by Montrose — Georgie H., by imported Kyrle Daly.
