| GREAT WINNERS AMONG i DERBY WINNERS I i Gallant Fox and Zev are the two largest money winners among Kentucky Derby winners. Each has won over 00,000, the first mentioned with 28,165 to his credit and the latter with 13,639. Each for a time headed the worlds greatest money winners. Other Derby winners which throughout their racing careers accumulated large earnings on the turf were Twenty Grand, 61,790; Exterminator, 52,996; Reigh Count, 78,-170; Morvich, 72,909; Omaha, 46,105; Cavalcade, 27,165; Clyde Van Dusen, 22,-112; Sir Barton, 16,857; Burgoo King, 10,940; Black Gold, 10,553; Whiskery, 08,565. All of these big winners won the Derby after the year 1917. None of the great horses enrolled on the Derby scroll of winners in the early years of the race won as much as 00,000. The marvelous Hindoo, Derby winner of 1881, was the largest winner among the stars of long ago. He won 1,875, the result of thirty victories out of thirty-five starts, in which he was never unplaced, finishing second three times and third twice. The gallant little Ben Brush, which won the Derby in 1896, completed his racing career with twenty-five triumphs out of forty starts, being second in five and third in five, to earn 5,217. Not a Derby winner after Ben Brush until in 1914 when the courageous cripple Old Rosebud, carried off the coveted prize, won as much as 0,000. Old Rosebud had a long and meritorious career, interrupted twice by infirmities, only to come back and race as brilliantly as ever. He started in eighty races, of which he won forty, finishing second in thirteen and third in eight and earning 4,729. A new tabulation, the first time ever presented, shows how much money each Kentucky Derby winner earned during his or her Regret career on the turf. This interesting compilation likewise reveals in no uncertain terms the meagre opportunities of the great horses of the early days of the race to garned much in monetary returns though they raced with signal success.
