ORNAMENTS DEFEAT IN 1897 Ornament, owned by C. T. Patterson and Co., and trained by the late C. T. Patterson, was one of the best race horses of his day and generation, both as a two and three-year-old. As a juvenile he started twelve times, winning seven, including the Melbourne Stakes at Lexington, the Futurity at Lexington. Double Event both and the Flatbush, for which he defeated Ogden, winner of the Futurity. He was a natural winter favorite for the Kentucky Derby in 1897. Ornament had been backed heavily in the future books and on the day of the race went to the post an even money favorite. The race, however, was won by Typhoon II., owned and trained by Leu Cahn, with Ornament second and Dr. Catlett third.
