BREVITY AND GRANVILLE GRANVILLEUNLUCKY UNLUCKY IN 1936 DERBY The running of the 1936 Derby was marred by a terrific jam right after the start which hot only caused Granville to fall and to un ¬ seat jockey Stout but also sent Brevity to his knees and Wayne Wright had every ¬ thing to do to retain his seat on the Widener colt Considering the mishap to Brevity it was a remarkable effort on his part to finish second only beaten by a head by Bold Ven ¬ ture which gave his owner and trainer Max Hirsch his first victory in the coveted event In view of what Granville accomplished later finishing the year as the outstanding horse of 1936 it is difficult to surmise what art he would have played in the Derby if e had escaped the trouble at the start
