ORNAMENTS DEFEAT IN 1897 Ornament owned by C T Patterson and Co and trained by the late C T Patterson was one of the best race horses of his day and generation both as a two and three yearold As a juvenile he started twelve times winning seven including the Mel ¬ bourne Stakes at Lexington the Futurity at Lexington Double Event both and the Flatbush for which he defeated Ogden win ¬ ner of the Futurity He was a natural win ¬ ter favorite for the Kentucky Derby in 1897 Ornament had been backed heavily in the future books and on the day of the race went to the post an even money favorite The race however was won by Typhoon II owned and trained by Lou Cahn with Orna ¬ ment second and Dr Catlett third
