SURPRISE DERBY OF 1882 In 1882 the Dwyer Brothers Runnymede was a strong winter favorite for the Ken ¬ tucky Derby and went to the post at 4 to 5 but Apollo owned and trained by Green Morris of New Orleans won the race at odds of 10 to 1 However Runnymede was a great race horse as he showed later when he won the Clark Stakes with Babcock sec ¬ ond and Apollo third Runnymede proved to be about the best threeyearold of his year He won the Tidal Stakes Coney Island Derby Lorillard Stakes etc after he was taken back East The threeyearold racing career of Runnymede was analogous to that of Blue Larkspur both of them were de ¬ feated in the Kentucky Derby and both later wiped out that defeat and became acknowl ¬ edged champions
