ENTHUSIASTIC CROWD SEES HOMEWOOD INAUGURAL War Emblem Accounts for Lakeside Handicap in Denemark Silks Chilly Weather and Lack of Outstanding Feature Af ¬ fects Attendance io Certain Extent Long LongList List of Star Attractions Ahead HOMEWOOD HI May 24 The major racing season of Illinois got under way at Washington Park here this afternoon where the Washington Park Jockey Club inaugurated a thirtyday meeting before a more or less modest but nevertheless enthusiastic crowd headed by Chicagos mayor Edward J Kelly The Monday opening was not conducive to a banner turnout as there was no outstanding attraction yet the program as ar ¬ ranged by racing secretary Charles J McLennan was nicely balanced and produced its share of thrilling contests Considering the offday opening chilly weather and lack of an outstanding attraction the inaugural was highly staisfactorv to Walter L Greeorv Dresident of the Washington Park Jockey Club and Benjamin Lind heimer chairman of the executive board The mutuel play was on a par with agoif similar weekdays a year ago if not better and all Jn all the start seemed to auger well for the success of the meeting as a whole wholeThe The principal event of the session will be the revival of the American Derby which is to be run for a 25000added purse on Saturday June 19 while other features down for decision before the end of thirty racing days are the Princess Pat the Wash ¬ ington Park Futurity the Chicago Handicap the Prairie State Stakes the Blue and Gray Memorial and the Great Western Handicap Two of these events the Chicago Handicap and Prairie State Stakes are to be pre ¬ sented on Saturday SaturdayILLINOISOWNED ILLINOISOWNED HORSES HORSESIllinoisowned Illinoisowned horses seemed to sense the occasion for they not only won a majority of the days races but one of them Mrs Emil Denemarks War Emblem took down the principal contest the Lakeside Handicap at one mile which was offered as the fifth race Carrying 111 pounds and running the eight furlongs under jockey Charley Kurt singer in 137 the fouryearold Big Blaze colt won by a neck while pressing him for honors were Woodlander Wild Turkey and Giant Killer which finished second third and fourth respectively Salaam and Span ¬ ish Babe were the only other starters startersWar War Emblem which was scoring his first victory of the year was a contender from the beginning He took the lead from Salaam after covering about half the distance but then lost it to Wild Turkey coming on again in the final eighth to get to the front once more In taking the lead near the end the Denemark racer bore out on Wild Turkey but it is doubtful whether it had any bear ¬ ing on her performance performanceWoodlander Woodlander finished on the outside of both War Emblem and Wild Turkey and got the place by a head in the last few strides while Giant Killer the favorite was still farther to the outside a neck back of Wild Turkey TurkeySalaam Salaam quit badly after a half race was an interesting spectacle however and was hotly contested by the first four to finish right down to the wire wireThe The winners time recorded over a fast track was just a second and fourfifths off the course record held by that sterling mare Myrtlewood MyrtlewoodDistinction Distinction of winning the first race of the meeting fell to the Milky Way Farm stable of Mrs Ethel V Mars of Chicago Her colors were carried to a popular victory by Mountain Ridge which under Alfred Robertson turned back eight other maiden twoyearolds in handy fashion in spite of running out badly turning into the stretch at a loss of many lengths The race was decided over five furlongs and at the end the son of Royal Minstrel and Ethel Dear hav ¬ ing led from the start was a length and a half in front covering the distance in the good time of 59 threefifths of a second off the track record Closest to the Milky Way representative at the end was the Calu ¬ met Farm stables Taxes which had Sure Lad as a running mate while Commission was a distant third thirdNASH i FOREi NASH COLORS TO FORE FOREAnother Another Chicagoowned horse Sun Mica the property of P A and R JNashs Shan don Farm accounted for the second event in which twelve met over seven furlongs Outfinishing the more favored Boiling Point in a long stretch duel Sun Mica with Chuck Parke at the reins got the decision by a neck Transport finished third and Black Peter fourth Sun Mica and Boiling Point went out to fight for the lead shortly after the break and approaching the furlong post the latter got in front of his rival Sun Mica however still had something left and continuing on with determination achieved the hardearned victory Transport came from a long way back to be third four lengths off the leaders Those who sup ¬ ported Sun Mica and Mountain Ridge in the Daily Double combination were rewarded to the extent of 7480 for 2 2The The Jay Dee Stable maintained by John Dunn of Chicago Heights provided the win ¬ ner of the third race with Sleepy Joe which was making his first start of the Illinois season The sixyearold Master Charlie gelding handled by George Dobson moved up fast after reaching the stretch and won by a length and a quarter as the favorite Star Bess had to be content with second honors and Peter Pumpkin was third Peter Pumpkin raced the early pacemaker Two Tricks into defeat entering the stretch and took a sizeable lead but then gay way to the winner and runnerup being beaten four lengths for the place placeIMPROVED IMPROVED PERFORMANCE PERFORMANCERacing Racing in somewhat improved fashion the Woolford Farms Conrad Mann ridden by apprentice Sammy Roberts was a popular winner of the fourth race a run of a mile and seventy yards which engaged six three yearold platers It was the first victory of Conrad Manns career and he achieved it by the margin of threequarters of a length Night Bandit was second and Tedsim third The Woolford Farm representative overcame early interference and finished with fine speed after reaching the stretch to earn the decision wearing down the pacemaker Night Bandit right near the end The latter beat Tedsim a length for the place while Legsure led home the others othersThe The second victory in a double for the popular Shandon Farm of Patrick A and Richard J Nash was registered by Burning Star when that stables American Derby can ¬ didate turned back five other threeyearolds at one mile and seventy yards in the Wood lawn Purse With Charles Parke in the sad ¬ dle and running the distance in the excel ¬ lent time of 142 the Nash colorbearer won by two and onehalf lengths while Mrs Denemarks Muscatine which was sec ¬ ond defeated A C Ernsts Alkit by four lengths for that portion of the purse money Bakerstown Come To Taw and Me O My completed the field fieldWith With Come To Taw second choice of the winner running a dull race Burning Star encountered no serious opposition though Parke was moved to punish him when Mus ¬ catine loomed up as a mild threat as the Shandon horse tired in the final furlong
